St Augustine Burials Liverpool
St Augustine Burials Liverpool
I have an ancestor who was apparently buried here on the 22nd January 1893.
Does this site still exist and if so how would I find a plot number...?
His name was Michael Reynolds and his age was given as 43.

Re: St Augustine Burials Liverpool
Hi and welcome to the forum.
You asked about a site? I thought you meant a website, but assume you mean the site of a cemetery or graveyard connected to the church.
The main St Augustine's Church that I am aware of is in Everton, but as the Parish Register states that he lived in Garston, I wonder if I have the incorrect church.
If nobody with any local knowledge is able to respond to this question, then I think your recourse is the Liverpool Record Office which should have the burial records and presumably also the grave numbers. They also have maps for each of the RC and C of E churches so you may be able to identify whether the location is indeed in the south end of Liverpool rather than the one in Everton.

Re: St Augustine Burials Liverpool
I believe Ancestry has the incorrect name of the Church. I believe - due to the fact that your Michael is actually listed in the burials - that you should be enquiring for St Austin's, Grassendale. There is a website http://www.staustinsgrassendale.org.uk/ but although the main page is not very informative the links do actually work and so it would seem that the church is still in existence.
There is also a cemetery map http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~diz/StAustins ... ary-01.pdf
Genuki has a photograph of it http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Ga ... stin.shtml
and https://maps.google.co.uk/ has it on Aigburth Road opposite Grassendale Road.
PS the Volume you need to check at the Record Office is 282-AUS-3-2

Re: St Augustine Burials Liverpool
I agree with Mary. The church is still active and the small graveyard is accessible.
There was an RC church of St Augustine in Gt Howard St, 1849-1970s, and a CofE in Shaw Street, 1830-May 1940 (blitz).

Thank you all for the replies, very quick.
Mary A thank you also for the welcome, it is very much appreciated.
Erika, that is him, this is the record that I obtained the information from.
Mary A, the church name and record are correct and Daggers you are right the church was apparently on Great Howard Street.
The burial place and church used, appear strange to me as well, but I believe it was possibly used as he was a Roman Catholic.
I original tried for burials around the Garston area, St Michaels being one where we have recently had family members services, yet looking back they were not catholics.
I was unaware to be honest myself that ST Augustine had a grave yard, although it must of as the record I have and posted here by Erika shows. Looking on the full page of the record there are other deaths from various parts of Liverpool, Woolton for instance , just a stones throw from Garston, which would appear to back up the theory of it being used for Roman Catholic Services at that time.
I originally posted on the site because I wanted to visit a grave, to see if I could indeed gather any more information about him, as in his earlier life he proved very elusive after his birth in the 1840's, being unable to find him or his family on the 1851, 1861 or the 1871 census.
I was hoping there would maybe something on the grave of other family members.

There is also this from 1851 Census.
So many names are similar to the children in 1891 , thought it could be him.
Recorded as Michl Reynolds b abt 1848 in Manchester

Re: St Augustine Burials Liverpool
I suggest you check this volume at the Record. If you find the entry for Michael Reynolds, as I suggest you probably will, since I have found the entry transcribed by others in St Austin's, then Ancestry has incorrectly labelled their database as St Augustine's, and St Austin's is what I and Daggers are advising is still there.MaryA wrote:

Re: St Augustine Burials Liverpool
Latin experts might know if Austin is translated as Augustine. I only learned some of the ancient version and have forgotten most of it.
If I get a chance I'll have a look in the Grassendale graveyard tomorrow.

Re: St Augustine Burials Liverpool
The burial registers for St Augustine Great Howard Street only go up to 1892 at Liverpool Record Office. I believe Ancestry filmed the records at Liverpool Record Office so I agree with Mary and Daggers that the church is actually St Austin as their registers go up to 1895.

Re: St Augustine Burials Liverpool
The burial is as MaryA say's St. Austin's Grassendale and not St. Augustine's there was no burial ground at St. Augustine's on Great Howard Street. The registers ref number 3 are Libri Defunctrum registers filled in at the Reqium mass. There is a churchyard at St. Austin's and I was in there haveing a look around there a good few years back (As us family history boffins always do) and I am sure there are Roman Catholic Priest's from St. Augustine's Parish intered there.
Just to make a point I was speaking to PW Record Office on Saturday about the Liverpool Records on Ancestry especially the Roman Catholic Records and they are not to pleased either with the transcribing and errors.

Re: St Augustine Burials Liverpool
As Katie said, there are headstones recording a number of priests in the graveyard of St Austin's. During a quick walk round I could not spot any stone with the name Reynolds, but the burial ground is bigger than it seems and I was unable to examine every memorial.
I have asked someone who I think attends the church if he has any contact who could give us the location and will report if successful.

Re: St Augustine Burials Liverpool
Thank you for trying with that Daggers.
Have had a further look online and apparently some graves have been moved over the years due to the widening of Aigburth road on 2 seperate occasions.
I believe however that all the graves and headstones were relocated on the site.
I will visit the site as well and have a good look around.
With reference to the other Reynolds deaths on the register.
Where would be the best place to view details that would possibly report an address and or parents etc.
There is one that Mary E posted of a Sarah E Reynolds but that address was actually placed in the name section alongside the name.
