:D OK you twisted my arm. My Gt Grandma was a naughty girl - she had 3 girls before she married
daughter 1 born 1889, daughter 2 born 1891 died 1892 - both in Walton Workhouse and my Grandmother Mary Walsh/Welsh born 1893. date of birth 13/10/1893 according to the 1939 NHS Register. I have checked all the Mary Walsh/Welsh on the GRO with no luck. Gt Grandma finally married James Ruddy in 1895 at St Alexanders Church and had a further 9 children - all found. The only reason I can think of is she may have been registered under another name (perhaps the father's).
Because I cannot find any baptisms I have assumed that they used St Alexanders Church.

OK Chaps - on your marks :D
Yappie

Hi Yappie,
Your g.g.mother was Mary Ann Welsh when she married James Ruddy. Have you checked out this birth registered in 1894?
Births Dec 1894: WELSH, Mary Ann - Liverpool - 8b - 123.

And the baptism from http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co. ... rcbaptisms :
Ref: 1894/249 - WORKHOUSE - bn 1894 - bpt 1894 - child: MARY WELSH - mother: MARY WELSH [father not named].

That 1939 NHS Register entry for grandmother Mary Walsh/Welsh, date of birth 13/10/1893, was possibly a best guesstimate as regards the actual year given the circumstances of her birth. When that register was compiled no 'official' proof of birth was required for 'ordinary folk'.

The baptism took place in St Nicholas, Register of Baptisms of Children born in the Liverpool Workhouse, Brownlow Hill, Reference Number: 282 NIC/4/3.
Born 20 April, baptised 27 April, 1894. Maria Welsh, child of Maria Welsh. Godmother Brigida Kelly.

But is it the same birth? It certainly looks like it with the 282-NIC-4-3B (174) baptism reference on the Liverpool History Projects site.

There's also:
Births Jun 1894: Welsh, Mary - Liverpool - 8b - 90
or
Births Dec 1894: WELSH, Mary Ann - Liverpool - 8b - 123.

Well the other one may be the Mary born 22nd May, baptised 25th May, 1894 whose parents are Jacobi and Maria (nee Killcoyne), godmother Maria Higgins.

No luck with baptism of Mary Ann.

Hi

Thank you so much for all your help. Dickiesam I think I will send for that certificate as it looks like it could be the one. I apologise for the delay in replying as I am in the process of moving house.
