Margaret Owen & Percy Hulme to Australia?

Post by erika »

Hi All

Have just found that Percy Hulme ended up in Australia, but what about his wife Margaret Owen?

The information I have so far
Margaret Owen (b. 1892) married Percy Hulme(b. 1890) on 14 Nov 1917 at St Cyprian, Edge Hill.
I found Percy's WW1 record on Ancestry RASC 047574 and at the end of the record was a letter from a Secretary of the Returned Sailors & Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia in Kilkenny S.Australia.
He was writing to the War Office in Woolwich on behalf of Percy as he had lost his discharge papers and wanted a record of his services as he wanted to join this organisation.
He gave his address as 32 Rowell Crescent, Kilkenny, S.Australia. The letter was written on 29 May 1936.

With some help from Australian folk the following information was forthcoming
Passenger arrivals
Mr P Hulme on Ormonde at Port Adelaide 24 December 1936

Death Notice
Percy Hulme 1 Feb 1968 age 78yrs Married - No relative noted
Residence St Kilda, Death place St Kilda - PtA43A/814

He had a Memorial Service at Centennial Park on 26 March 1968

He apparently died intestate, but his father's name was given - Walter.
This name also was on his marriage cert and I have 1891, 1901 census from Threapwood where Percy was born and lived as a child.

So this seems to fit with Percy Hulme alright, but there is no mention of Margaret in any records.
I don't know whether they had any children, although there are Hulme/Owen births on FreeBMD

My concern is Margaret and what became of her?
Percy obviously went to Australia his War Record being the proof, but can anyone help me with Margaret please, I would be very grateful.
Sorry to have rambled on, but I think you need to have as much info as possible

Although it is a few years later than the marriage I would very much suspect that the Hulme children born in West Derby, mother's maiden name Owen, ie
Mary G in 1921, Ellen in 1925 and Joseph in 1927 are Percy and Margarets since there are no other Hulme/Owen marriages in the same area.

I would think it would be worth a punt at one of the birth certificates to see if we are right. (too late for online baptisms).

Sadly there is a death for a Margaret Hulme with the right birth date Q3 1937 Liverpool North 8b 449 (only 45 years old). No burial for that date on Ancestry.

I should say that I went looking for the death since I didn't find any emigration or incoming passenger by that name.

Hi Erika,
The only Percy Hulme in the outgoing passenger lists from the UK, 1918 to 1945, is this one heading for Spain....
Name: Percy HULME
Date of departure: 21 October 1927
Port of departure: Southampton
Passenger destination port: Vigo, Spain
Passenger's last address in UK: Harrison, Sunnyside Gardens, ??forminster?, Essex.
Country of intended future permanent residence: UK

Date of Birth: 1889 (calculated from age)
Age: 38
Occupation: Mining engineer
Passenger recorded on: Page 2 of manifest

Ship: ALCANTARA
Official Number: 148151
Steamship Line: The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company
Where bound: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Perhaps Percy fully intended returning to the UK but his mining job took him eventually Down-under where he stayed. No sign of Margaret heading outside the UK yet.

Thank you Mary & DS for your replies

I considered those births Mary and will probably get one of the certs, although I was reluctant to start with as none of the names of the children have cropped up before in the family :? Names seem to have been passed on as a rule.

DS, not sure about the first passenger list, but the 2nd ties in with what I had from Australia.
But where is this address
Passenger's last address in UK: Mills Hotel, Gower Street, WC.
Country of intended future permanent residence: Australia.

I think Mechanic would fit too as on his army record it mentions mechanic, working on the lorries etc.

I will check on Margaret's death that you found Mary.

Maybe he remarried in Australia as the death of Percy Hulme there said he was married.

Bit more digging required

WC would be London WC. People boarding at London Docks often stayed in a hotel in the area prior to boarding. Most of the passengers giving London addresses had the address shortened to just the 'old' postcodes for London of which WC was one [West Central].

I suspect the hotel will be long gone but you will find Gower Street here: http://maps.google.ie/maps?hl=en&bav=on ... CDUQ8gEwBA

Thanks DS, thought it may have been London.
Just need to find out where the family were living in Liverpool, maybe electoral register could help.

In the absence of an ER entry I suggest Joseph's 1927 birth cert would give the family's 'interim' address and Margaret's death cert the 'final' address, although we don't know what happened to the children.

Hi Erika

There is a P. Hulme arriving in Australia on the Ormonde on the 24th December 1929. The first port of call was Fremantle, then Adelaide and other ports on the east coast. This is the record DS found. There does not appear to be a Margaret Hulme travelling with him, although there is a M. Hulme in later records. The incoming passenger records for the Ormonde (for those pax disembarking at Fremantle and may also include pax disembarking at other ports) are held in Perth at the National Archives of Australia, and are on open access, but not online.

Between 1921-1949 there were 66 persons with the surname Hulme on the Passenger Arrivals Index to Australia, (ship & air). Worth keeping in mind for later.

Hope this helps.

Louis

Hi Louis and thank you for your input. The M Hulme you mentioned, what year did that show up in records?

The incoming passenger records for the Ormonde (for those pax disembarking at Fremantle and may also include pax disembarking at other ports) are held in Perth at the National Archives of Australia, and are on open access, but not online.

How am I able to access these records, living in England, or are you able to access them?

Hi Erika,
Just to possibly clear a point.. there's a Mrs M Hulme in the UK outgoing passenger lists for 1926 but she is the wife of Mr F Hulme from Hyde in Cheshire, so not your Margaret.

Name: Mrs M HULME
Date of departure: 30 October 1926
Port of departure: London
Passenger destination: Sydney, Australia
Date of Birth: 1899 (calculated from age)
Age: 27
Marital status: Married
Occupation: Housewife

Passenger recorded on Page 9 of manifest with her husband Mr F HULME.
Ship: OSTERLEY.

Have to say that, sadly, it looks to me from what has been posted so far that Percy may have deserted his wife and family. There is no sign of any of the children following him out there even after Margaret's death [if the one in 1937].

You have come to the conclusion that was in my mind but without further evidence was hesitant to suggest.

Well what fun would our hobby be without a touch of scandal now and again.

You Are A STAR TINA :D :D

That newspaper cutting is definitely Percy as his parent's names are at the bottom.

Is there any way that I can find out whether anyone came forward to claim? Do those solicitors still exist? Would there be records?
Sorry for all these questions, but it would be good to find out what happened.
Have sent for Margaret's death cert, if it is her and Joseph's birth.

Very well spotted Tina! Great stuff.

Erika, unfortunately a search of the Adelaide white pages business directory gave a list of 569 solicitors while a search on their name gave zero hits. You could try this site for help: http://www.whitepages.com.au/externalUr ... .sa.gov.au
It's the Attorney General's Office site and may have a contact for queries email address.
