I was hoping that someone would be able to answer a question for me. I am looking at the 1901 census and in the birthplace it states "Russia - Brit. Subject". Would someone be able to tell me what that meant?

Hi,
I would take it that the person was born in Russia but has British nationality because his father was British. His mother may or may not have been British. However there is the possibility that the person had foreign parents but had applied for and obtained naturalisation to become a British citizen. Although the latter would usually be indicated by the word 'Nat' after 'Brit Subject'.

I would concur with Dickiesam's suggestion but add that it could have been a foreign wife/husband who had married a British person. If you suspect the person officially applied for and became naturalised, then you could check on the National Archives site to see if they are listed.
