Thank you Mary - I have sent you a PM! Apologies!

William Henry Halsall died in 1927 - his daughter said that he was living with his uncle Thomas in Paulton Street. I would just like to find out which uncle this was?

Regards

Victoria

Not sure if this could be a possibility
Address not Paulton St but at
7 HOULTON Street there was a Thomas Halsall warehouseman in 1914 Directory

Maybe something

There were only 3 people listed in Paulton Street in the 1914 directory, so not sure what kind of a street it was.
Maybe one of our genius members will have an idea

Seems to have been a residential street, but they definitely were not at 7 Paulton Street in 1911, although perhaps Victoria recognises the other family members in Houlton Street, ie wife is Harriett and children Thomas, William and Harriett.

Paulton Street was a turning off Harlow Street on the old maps. Harlow Street still exists and there is now a Paulton Close whose post code is L8 4UR which might help you to find it. I went onto http://www.ol-maps.co.uk and then played and enhanced and enlarged till I found it!

Houlton St postcode L7 2QW is a turning of Kensington.

Hi Victoria

I have a 1938 directory which I think is the only one available.
I know it's too late for William H Halsall to appear, but there are no Thomas Halsall's in Paulton Street and only about 4 listed for that street altogether.
How about an Electoral Roll lookup? I think that needs to be done at the Record Office tho'

Sorry not to have anything really helpful :(

Thanks for your time Erika! Would you mind telling me the names of the people that did live there?

The people living at Paulton Street in 1938 Directory were
1 "Bessemer Inn" Geo Powell
7 James Trafford Shopkeeper
21 Wm Wright Shopkeeper
28a Thomas Webster Coal Dealer

1914 Directory
1 "Bessesmer Inn" Wm Edmund Hayman
7 David Eaves shopkeeper
21 Ellen Hume Grocer

1914
William Henry Halsall was living at 187 Beaufort St

Do you think there are 2 W H Halsalls as he appears in the 1938 at Beaufort St and has already died!!
Did he have a son?

Is this another mystery

Thanks Erika!

Can I ask what the entry says in the 1938 directory in Beaufort Street please! William H did have a son called William John but he got married in 1935 and as far as I know moved to the Isle of Man!

These are the occupations I have for William H:

Warehouseman (1881), Warehouse Keeper(1884), Dock Labourer (1894 & 1901), Labourer (1920)

Does the occupation Warehouse Keeper mean he owned his own warehouse or just worked there?

Every time I go back to researching this side of the family I end up more confused! My nickname for them is the "awful Halsalls!!" :?

The names in Paulton Street don't seem to fit in - I wonder why there was only 4 listings.

Thanks for your time!

Sometimes the entries had to be paid for in directories, so not everybody wanted to bother.

As far as Warehouse Keeper is concerned, that is possibly a job that he did for somebody else, however, worth investigating to see if you can find out any more. I had a James Ayre who I thought was in London, although his son had come to Liverpool, he had been noted in a census as Warehouse Keeper, but on the son's marriage certificate it said Superintendent instead, by chance looking through the newspapers I discovered entries by the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board of his increments in wages. Hope you get lucky and find some details.

The 1938 directory has William Henry Halsall as a labourer, but if he died in 1927 it seems strange he is still listed. Did his son live at that addess, although you thought he'd gone back to IOM and his middle name wasn't Henry :?

No wonder you give them the name "awful Halsalls"
A real mystery

Thank you! Can I ask what the house number was in Beaufort Street please!

Mary - thank you too! . Family notes state that William Henry Halsall became a “checker” at the docks and wore a special suit with stripes and a bowler hat. - any ideas what this job would be please!

Hi Victoria

Think I've been leading you up the garden path!!
Just realised I had both Directories going at the same time and in 1938 there is no Halsall at Beaufort Street, sorry. Just 1914.

If you can pm me with your email address I'll send you the list of all Halsalls in 1938, maybe there will be a name that jumps out.
