Have just got hold of a death certificate for a grandmother who died in this hospital in 1975. She was 98 years old. Her usual residence was Waterloo, Liverpool, so I am puzzled as to why she was in a Warrington Hospital as there were no other relatives in the area. Was the hospital also a nursing home ? Regards Moya

Hi Moya
Back in the late 60's/70's Winwick Hospital had a reputation for being a Mental Hospital but it did have many geriatric wards and was used for respite care when family carers went on holiday. My grandmother was sent there for 2 weeks in the 70's from Litherland where we lived.
It could well be the reason your grandmother was there when she sadly passed away.
Maybe someone else could have another explanation

It's sad to say that June's explanation is probably correct, at sometime in the 1960's I visited there as part of a work experience from school and we helped out where we could, feeding and washing some of the patients who were unable to do so themselves. The majority of them would have had dementia I believe and very probably the families were unable to manage to look after these ladies at home.

Hi Moya
My grandfather died in there in 1945, if you contact Cheshire Archives by email they will look up the record for you and tell you why she was there, that is if the record still exists. They were really helpful regarding my grandfather. Unfortunately some of the records were destroyed during a flood which happened just before it was pulled down but you maybe lucky.
Good Luck
Chris
