I think "Joseph" may have used that name rather than his official name since I have found a marriage I believe would be them
Arnold Dykes to Dorothy W Lewis Q1 1937 Liverpool 8b 787

To move forward - or rather backwards, you will need their marriage certificate which you can order online at http://www.gro.gov.uk using the reference I have given above. This certificate will give you the ages of both, so that the dates of birth can be calculated, addresses, occupations and fathers names and occupations - very important. Also there will be the witnesses noted which may or may not be family members to help with the search.

When you have this information it would be best to have two separate posts one for each family, perhaps continuing this one with the Dykes and another for the Lewis's.

It is possible that your mother may have had a brother a couple of years younger than the sister.

Hi,
Because we are getting into the area of people who are still living, your mother's siblings, I have sent you a PM.

Hi,
If the above post was intended for me, can you tell me what it is you do not understand? If it is in connection with 'living people' this is a genealogy forum where we hopefully find ancestors. Looking for living relatives has to be done off-forum.

We will happily assist you trace your family backwards - as much as we can, but we try to keep details of living people private. So just in case they are still living, Dickiesam has probably sent you the details of the birth of your uncle.

You seem to be just starting out on this fun hobby of ours and you might find it useful to glance through some of the posts on the FAQ board as some of the posts will help you know what can be looked up and perhaps what assistance we would be able to give on this forum.

We have also tried to put together a few hints about searching for living people http://www.forum.liverpool-genealogy.or ... =14&t=8154

Hi Cup-of-tea,
This is one of the reasons you need to get the marriage certificate. Between 1900 and 1920 these are all the births of Joseph and Arnold Dykes in Liverpool.

From FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
Births Sep 1900: Dykes, Joseph - W. Derby - 8b - 483
Births Sep 1909: DYKES, Joseph - W Derby - 8b - 536

From 1912 the maiden names of mothers were included in the birth Index....
Births Mar 1919: Dykes, Joseph - m/n Cummins - Toxteth P. - 8b - 212
Births Dec 1916: Dykes, Arnold - m/n Carr - W. Derby - 8b - 473.

The marriage cert will give an age for him and if he was born in Liverpool we should be able to pick him out from the above quartet. Having done that, if the birth was after the 1911 census, you should get the birth certificate which will give both his parents' names.

Where did you get your g.father's forename as Joseph given that when he married he called himself Arnold?
