Hi All

The above are 2 of the sons of Joseph Kellet Smith, both born Liverpool.

I have Sydney on all census apart from the 1901 and have tried to find him but failed, 1891 census:- Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 2876; Folio: 70; Page: 21; GSU roll: 6097986. he is living at Lang Lane, West Kirkby aged 17, occ. dental apprentice. He married Emily Maud Goddard in 1909 in the registration district of Wandsworth, London, 1911 census has him living 78 Langham Road, Teddington Middlesex, occ Dental Surgeon.
Can anyone find him on the 1901 census please.


Herbert Chippendale Smith have him on all census but the 1911 census, 1901 census he is single living with parents at Lang Lane, Class: RG13; Piece: 3387; Folio: 133; Page: 21. aged 23, occ Architect & Surveyor. Can't find a death for him either. Can anyone find him on the 1911 census. I have also failed to find a marriage for him.

I know the surname Smith is sometime difficult to find millions of them!!!

Fresh eyes maybe.

I think this Sydney in 1901..

SMITH, Sidney - u/m - 26 - 1875 - Private, Royal Army Medical Corps - Liverpool.
RG13 - Piece:613 - Folio: 175 - Page:17
Address: Provisional Battalion & Imperial Yeomanry, Maida & Mandora Barracks, Harrow Road, Aldershot, Hants.

There are military records for this man. His next of kin was Lilian Smith, mother, of Hillview, West Kirby, Cheshire.

A shot in the dark...
Haven't found a living Herbert C Smith after 1901 yet, but there is a possible death at sea. The initials may have been accidentally switched.. Don't know if he/she was a passenger or mariner.

There's also a Smith, H G. The G may have been written for a C.

The death is a possibility and would explain no 1911 census, I would need to purchase the cert to be sure I suppose. I know he was alive in 1905 when his father died I have his will and he is a benificiary.

When was the death reg with H G Smith.

It is on the same page 1910. But hold off the cert buying just yet. I have discovered plenty of possible deaths, all born 1877 +/- 2 years. Coupled with this marriage in 1910 there's a way to go and you need to check this one first. This is a marriage you may already have checked out..

SMITH, Herbert C married either BIDNALL, Lilly or ROSE, Emily.
Registration district: Fulham, London
Year/qtr of registration: 1911 / Mar
Volume no: 1A; Page no: 545.

There don't appear to be any Smith nee Bidnall births, but plenty of Smith nee Rose. If you order the cert from the GRO make sure you specify his father's name. You can do that by ticking the box to indicate you do not know the GRO reference [even though you do!] and a new page will open for additional info. The GRO will search on that info 1 year either side of 1910 and if the cert is not the right one they will refund 50% of the fee they took off you.

I haven't checked out the marriage so like you say if this his him then the death is not, didn't know you could ask for the search so thanks for telling me about that it's better than wasting the full amount, I will remember this when doing research because it is expensive enough without wasting it. Hi Chris,
A bit more digging seems to rule out Emily Rose marrying Herbert C Smith. The other groom in that record was Thomas Honey. In the last census there's a TH with wife Emily Honey and a son [step-son?] Frank Rose aged 15. In 1901 Emily is with a husband George Rose and 2 children including Frank.

So looks like this Herbert married Lilly Bidnall:
BIDNALL, Lily - Grandchild - u/m - 21 - Laundress (Best Ironer) - Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.
Address: 48 Jervis Road, Fulham, London.
RG13 - Piece:61 - Folio: 57 - Page:37

Haven't found any Smith nee Bidnall births so the couple may have emigrated?

Great work there Dickiesam I have tried to find him on the emigration records but not found him yet, still trying.
