Hello All,
Does anyone recall please an article in the Liverpool Echo about 1990 (I know it is a long time ago) recalling that Newsham General Hospital, which had previously been the Belmont Road Workhouse had been demolished, and a basement had been discovered underneath containing files from Belmont Road Workhouse. The files were not yet over a hundred years old, so had to be filed somewhere, does anyone know where these files went to please?
Many Thanks

Wish I'd known this query earlier in the day, we were with Roger Hull and Margaret from the Record Office today at the Museum of Liverpool, they might have known.

However, looking at the Catalogue, I think this entry might be what you are interested in. "The 24 hours notice required" I believe will mean that they will be in document form at the satellite office of the Record Office at Sandhills, rather than in the World Museum on microfilm.

RefNo 614 NGN
Title Newsham General Hospital
Date 1909-1988
Description This collection contains records of Newsham General Hospital. Many records relate to its previous existence as the Belmont Road Workhouse and Belmont Road Hospital. The collection comprises series of admission and discharge registers, death registers and sexually transmitted disease registers. Also contains a visiting committee book, a punishment book, photograph albums and a few items of emphemera.
AdminHistory Newsham General Hospital began life as the Belmont Road Workhouse in 1891. After about 1917 it became known as the Belmont Road Institution and the importance of its medical services grew. It developed into a hospital for the chronically sick although it also had sections dealing with skin and orthopaedic problems, pulmonary tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases. During the Second World War the institution became the Belmont Road Hospital. In 1948 the hospital became part of the national health service, by this time its main focus being to provide geriatric care. In 1950 it changed its name to Newsham General Hospital, a name it retained until its closure in 1988.
