I am trying to trace details of Charlotte Alexander, who married David Williams on 4th December 1859. Her marriage certificate states that she was living in Kirkdale in the Parish of Walton on the Hill.

David Williams was a boilermaker and was born in Liverpool in 1839. His father, David Williams was from Tywyn, Merionethshire

The witnesses at their wedding were her sister Elizabeth Alexander, and Charles Romney. The officiating vicars name was Thomas Hornby

Charlottes father was John Alexander born in 1810, he was a bootmaker and her mothers name was also Charlotte, b1811

David Williams was a boilemaker and he was born in Liverpool in 1839. His father, David Williams, came from Tywyn, Merionethshire

The 1841 census shows Charlotte, aged five, living at Tyrer Street, Liverpool with her parents (RG No. H0107 Piece558 Folio 13/14 page 20)
The 1851 census shows her parents and siblings living at 14 Brunswick Place but there is no sign of Charlotte.(RG No.H10107 Piece 2190 Folio 433 Page 45)

In 1861 she is married and living with her husband and parents-in-law at 11 Calvin Street, Kirkdale and in 1871 her husband David is living at Hankin Street with his parents and three children; David Williams born 1862, Hugh Williams born 1864 and William Williams born 1867 but there is no record of Charlottes death near to this date.(RG14PN22123)

I would like to suggest that when you give brief descriptions of a census entry, that you also give the reference as it will then be easier for anybody wishing to check the details.

Was David noted as Widower in 1871?

I think the death of Charlotte Williams in Q3 1867 W. Derby 8b 223 age 35 will be worthwhile investigating.

Many Thanks MaryA for your advice and prompt reply,

I had already identified that entry in the deaths register but because the 1841 census gave Charlottes' age as five and therefore born about 1836 and not 1832 I discounted it. This was because I already have seven incorrect certificates for the WILLIAMS family (which I will shortly be sending to the Editor, Peter Jones to add to his collection) and if there are no other suggestions I will order that certificate.

Hi all,

Charlotte Williams aged 35 was buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery on 8 July 1867. She is listed as a Widow so looks like she is not the one.

Hello Tina

Many thanks for your reply that led me to finding the paternal grandparents of Charlotte Alexander, so two more names have been added to my family tree.

Concerning Charlotte Ann Williams I have discounted her as she was born in 1837 and the baptism record of Charlotte Alexander is May 1836.

Icky

Never discount one just because the age is out by a year or even a little more, somebody who wasn't literate may now have known exactly how old they were or which year they were born. The age at death that is given in the index and on the certificate is only as good information as whoever was giving it - after all it wasn't the person themselves was it?

Well said Mary, my sentiments indeed.
Charlotte is not with family 1871, if she died in 1872, she may well be in
a hospital/home etc etc and maybe not in the county as we have
found before.
