Merchant ship Guienne

Hi all
In an earlier post I said my ancestor James Filson asphyxiated on the Guienne on 9th February 1903 at 51.7N 5.38W which is somewhere west of the Bristol Channel
I am trying to find out more about this ship. I know the number was 97589 and it was registered in Liverpool.
My ancestor lived in Liverpool so this all makes sense.
If anyone has any information I should be grateful.
Thanks
J

Is it the ship or James career in the Merchant Navy you are interested in? Was he born in Ireland, Atrim, Belfast? If so it would seem that he was also on the Bohemian and previously the Thebes.
I don't think you will find out very much online, it might necessitate a visit to the National Archives where there will be a lot more data available.

Thanks Mary
A bit of both really - I wondered where the ship was going when he died and also what else he did.
He was born in Belfast in 1855 and came to Liverpool sometime before 1875 when he married Sarah Mealey in St Mary's Kirkdale,
I am interested in his career so how did you discover that he was on the Thebes and Bohemian?
If I have to go to National Archives that may have to wait until I have retired!

Thanks again
I found the crew lists but cannot work out how you were able to find his ship from the name -presumably I am being dumb!
I subscribe to Ancestry and Findmypast but didn't find anything there either.
Howeve it is very useful to have some idea of where he was and when

An update.
I went to the National archives and found the ships log for the Guienne for the voyage in 1903 when James Filson died. It turned out he asphyxiated in his berth - his bunk mate survived - and was then buried at sea off Nantes.
thanks again for all the help offered over many years.
