identity tag in brass G.G.D I3I3

My grandfather Thomas Wilfred Carney born 28th October 1909, served in the Merchant Navy and also worked for the railway at Garston. Amongst his personal effects I have found a round brass identity tag (size of a 2 pound coin).
Stamped into the tag is G.G.D. I3I3 or possibly 1313. He was also an Air Raid Warden in Aigburth and worked for Lockheeds manufacturing munitions in the Second World War. I have checked his Merchant Navy records, none of the numbers correspond.
Any ideas ?

Hi,
Does the tag have anything else on it besides the GDG 1313? Is it drilled to take a chain etc, or has a pin on the back.

Hello

The tag has a small hole drilled at the top like an identity tag.
It has nothing on the back completely smooth

Just an instinctive guess here to set the cells arolling.....
Garston something District or something Garston District.

I think it is a civilian work tally/token or ID. As far as I can remember Fire Watchers, Wardens and ARP wardens didn't carry official IDs like 'dog tags'. Their ID was their National Identity Card. My dad was in the Home Guard and his only ID while on duty was his National Identity Card.

Still thinking....

That seems to be a great thought lads, and I would confirm that it wouldn't be an Air Raid Warden badge as somewhere I have mum's which I seem to remember was shield like and badged ARP.

Hib :)
I emailed a pic to my cuz Tommy in Garston (amateur historian)
He said it's a tally, you used to when you started work and picked it up when you left.
That's how the men were paid.
You were spot on John.
