An enquiry has come through our online form rather than the forum, but I thought I'd see if anybody could assist. It's not going to be easy but I have done as best a translation job as I can on Babelfish.

To put into plainer English I suspect Jose knows very little except that his ancestor Jesse Oliver left England and travelled to Mexico - I wonder if he actually means "end of 1800" or the end of the 1800's which could be very different, to work at the Mexican Light and Power Co. in Necaxa, Puebla. An "A" was added to his surname making it "Olivera" and this has been continued by the family.

I have asked him to log onto our forum and try to give us more information but how much English he has I don't know.

All I know is that my great-grandfather was from Liverpool and at the end of 1800 traveled to Mexico where he started working at The Mexican Light and Power Co., Necaxa, Puebla. Then for some strange reason they added the letter "A" to the surname being as it is today. His name, to my knowledge was: Jesse Oliver. I really like to find out more about my family.

Yes that's going back a bit Tina, well I hope Jose will come on here and post some more information. Although he says he has none, I think I have asked a couple of pertinent questions that he may know the answers to and he has better English than I have Spanish, so let's hope.

I agree, but hopefully Lee's translation is better than I managed and the date might be nearer the end of the Century. In fact the reply I received from him now states

he left Liverpool in 1895. He traveled to Mexico and then he was hired by the Mexican Light and Power Co (1903-2009). Once the Mexican Revoultion started (1910-1917), government started to fire foreigner employees so the SME which it was the sindicate for that company until 2009 changed his name to Jesus Olivera Alvarez in order to not to get fired, he died in Pachuca Hidalgo state, Mexico Nov, 1940. What I`m trying to do is to contact possible relatives I may have in UK.

This is the only information I have from him except that he got married with a French girl he met in the ship on his way to Mexico.

I am insisting that he reply on here rather than to me personally and have asked for the following information -

his date of birth in particular and place of birth, and the information from his marriage certificate also, especially his father's name and occupation if given and whether he is aware if he had any siblings?

There are quite a number of Jesse Olivers on the 1891 census but none appear to have any connection to Liverpool, it could just be that he sailed from Liverpool and could have been born anywhere.

There isn't a J Oliver in the outgoing passenger list with a destination of Mexico between 1890 and 1905. So maybe he went to New York, for instance, and ended up in Mexico. Lots of J Olivers but only one Jesse among them....

If you can read Spanish - http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luz_y_Fuerza_del_Centro states that the company was founded in 1898, and that streetlights only came to Mexico in 1881 by another company "Mexicana de Gas y Luz Eléctrica".

So that's pretty much tied that up as far as the timeframe goes.
