Have any other forum members tried to find employment records from the LCP?
My great great father was employed as a Police Constable from about 1870 until his death in 1889 while still serving.
Any pointers would be much appreciated

A good site given by Erika, but there are not so many records for the Police Force, I think the recommended research is to check the Minutes of the Watch Committee.

I tried to find out more about my Grandfather who was in the LCP during and after WW1. In spite of a picture of him in his uniform and all his known details, the archivist could not identify him (granted h is name was John Jones!). I know he lost his job after the Police Strike of 1919 but would still like to find out any further details of his time with the police. Any help appreciated. (I will also check the site noted by Erika)

Hi,
I'm looking for information about my great grandfather who was in the Liverpool Police force too.
I came across this site
http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/education/ ... search.asp (remember that Liverpool was part of Lancashire back then) where you can search on a name and then request more information (which they will then copy and post to you for a fee).
Hope this helps some people - unfortunately some of the records are closed for a number of years yet, including the two possible John Jones's

Good luck everyone,

Welcome to the forum. I think it unlikely that records of Liverpool police will be among Lancs county force archives, as I suspect the borough had its own force before becoming a city. Hope I'm wrong!

I think you are right Daggers, however if anybody is visiting Preston anyway it won't be a wasted journey to check out the archives, although I wouldn't recommend a special trip is made just to research for Liverpool police.
It would be lovely to have it confirmed that there are records there for Liverpool, if anybody has the luck.

The records held at Lancashire Record Office do not cover Liverpool City Police Force. You can check if your person has a record held at Lancashire if their name comes up in the index on the Lancashire Record Office web page. If it's a very common name this might not be so easy!
My understanding is that few records exist for the Liverpool Police. When I was researching my great uncle I was told that the best source was the Minutes of the Watch Committee.

Hi,
I just received the information about my great grandfather (it was £10 including postage by the way) and the other posters are correct - that site doesn't cover the Liverpool City Police force, the record merely details his time in the Lancashire Constabulary.
But... the last remark on the record is "Transferred to Liverpool City Police on extension of boundaries" and the date of removal from the force is 9th November 1895. Around this time he was living in Kirkdale or Walton so it suggests that the Liverpool City Police boundaries must have changed then include these areas. So depending on the date and the area, Lancashire Constabulary may still hold some information on "Liverpool" policemen. EDIT: just noticed it says he was attached to the Bootle division so perhaps Bootle moved from Lancashire to Liverpool City on this date.
I don't know what the Minutes of the Watch Committee are. How would I find them?
Thanks,
Trish

The Watch Committee minutes are held at Liverpool Record Office.
