Am I doing something wrong?

Post by sakman21 »

Hi all,

Am pretty new to this game but really enjoying it. I am researching my Mums family names of Black and Aspinall and have started filling out the tree using Ancestry.

Having located the Birth Cert for her father I thought it would be pretty straight forward looking them up on the census records but so far am getting confusing results.

Name: John Harvey Black
DOB: 05/06/1898 - Bootle (54 Moore Street)
Father: Robert James Black
Mother: Annie Black ne Pimblett

(Sourced from Mum)

So far on the 1901 and 1911 I have not found any matches that tie up all the information and as the title suggests - "Am I doing something wrong"?

I appreciate this may be basic stuff but any advice will be greatly received.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum. You won't be doing anything wrong, just that sometimes it needs a little creative thinking to crack bad transcriptions on some sites.

Robert J Black married Annie Pimblett in 1894 in St Mary's Walton, there might have been another child before John was born. Can your mother remember any siblings? It's often easier to search for a family unit, the more the merrier, than for an individual.

Hi Ancestry doesn't always get the name right,1911 John Harvey Black is a John Harry Black, born Bootle parents Robert James and Annie with a few kids, they married at St Mary,Walton on the Hill 1894,do not worry we have all been there when that brickwall gets in the road, best just ask for help, you never know what sites others use that may be of use to you.

Thank you all very much. I have been banging my head against a wall for this one for a while. Can't believe some of the mistranscripts.

Hope to be able to return the favour one day.
