Catherine H Decie

Post by melness »

Catherine's parents were both born in Liverpool and I found her in censuses. She was born in Sydney, NSW, Australia in 1857

However, she doesnt seem to appear in the 1901 census. She died Oct-Dec 1908 although I've never seen her death cert.

I cannot seem to find her in 1901 census or 1891 - she was deaf and may have lived in an instituition at the time. Any suggestions? Thanks and seasons greetings.

Is Catherine the young lady in Brighton Deaf and Dumb asylum in the 1871 census? Then in 1881 she is in the isles of Scilly where her stepfather James H White is the Chaplain of the isles of Scilly. he was born in Liverpool. Her mother is given as Elizabeth M White born in India.

James H White and Elizabeth M Decie possibly married in 1868 at Oxton St Mary church (www.cheshirebmd.org.uk)

I cannot find James, Elizabeth or Catherine in the 1891 or 1901 census however I would suggest you track them down by finding out where James went to when he left the Isles of Scilly. Is it possible the whole family went abroad?

I would also suggest you get Catherine's death certificate.

Catherine Hale Decie

Hi Melness,
From the brief details you gave I assume this must be Catherine's death?
Name: DECIE, Catherine Hale
Registration District: Holborn, London
Year/qtr of Registration: 1908 / Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at death: 51
Volume No: 1B; Page No: 377.

And this must be her in 1881...
WHITE, James H - Head - Married - 47 - Chaplain Of The Isles Of Scilly - Liverpool.
WHITE, Elizabeth - Wife - 45 - Chaplains Wife - Calcutta, India.
DECIE, Catherine H - Step-dtr - u/m - 24 - Deaf & Dumb From Birth - New S Wales, Sydney, Australia.
Address: Hugh Street Parsonage, Scilly Islands, Cornwall.
RG11 - Piece:2532 - Folio:11 - Page:14

The apparent absence of Catherine's step-father and her mother from the 1891 and 1901 censuses, couple with the step-father's occupation as a clergyman would lead me to suspect the family are outside England and Wales. It would be worth buying Catherine's death certificate to find out who registered her death.

You possibly already have James and Elizabeth in 1871?
On census night they were living at different addresses.

WHITE, Elizabeth Maria - Wife - 34 - Calcutta, India.
COX, Sarah - Servant - 28 - Middlesex.
ENGLISH, Eliza - Servant - 27 - Middlesex.
Address: James St, St Margaret, Westminster, London, Middlesex.
RG10 - Piece:128 - Folio:39 - Page:6

WHITE, James H - Head - 37 - Chaplain to the Scilly Isles - Lancashire.
JENKIN, Jane - Servant - 23 - Cornwall.
Address: Hugh Street (Parsonage), St Mary Scilly, Hugh St Mary, Cornwall.
RG10 - Piece:2347 - Folio:12 - Page:15

Catherine's mother!

Post by dickiesam »

This explains Catherine's mother's absence from a census after 1881...

Death: WHITE, Elizabeth Maria
Registration District: Scilly Islands, Cornwall.
Year/qtr of Registration: 1884 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Age at death: 47
Volume No: 5C; Page No: 226.

Followed by...
Death: WHITE, James Henry
Registration District: Scilly Islands, Cornwall.
Year/qtr of Registration: 1884 / Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at death: 50
Volume No: 5C; Page No: 199.

The deaths knock my theory that the family may have been out of the country. So to find Catherine after 1881....

You need to get her death cert to find out who the informant was and Catherine's address when she died.

Thank you all. I'd found out about the 1871 and 1881 census.

The 1891 and 1901 census remain a mystery so will try and get the death certificate as suggested. Thank you again to all who replied.

Happy Christmas

Hello

Got a personal message saying there is a Catherine Dacey age 30 in an institution in Guidford, Surrey. That maybe her but cannot access census.

In 1901 there is a Kate Deacy in West Bromwich age 46.

I don't have access to thes via Ancestry or FMP
