I have been trying to trace my 3x gr-grandfather Barnabas Meadows. I have all the data on his conviction and his life in Australia but have not been able to find his birth or christning. Year of birth 1811-12. Possible places, Ormskirk, Wigan, Skelmersdale,parents Richard ( lots of Richards) but no match with mother, Hannah Slater. Even if the parents name are wrong ( death certificate info') not even a Barnabas anywhere near the birth year for my Barnabas.
The name Hannah was not carried on with his children all born in Victoria, Australia

Where do the possible places of birth come from please?

THis is perhaps a possible related Barnabas or sometimes Barnaby is not the most common name. I'm hoping via him we might get to yours if you see what I mean.

Isaac and his wife Margaret and family are in the 1851 census in Ashton. Both Isaac and Margaret give Skelmersdale as their places of birth

However I like the look of the parents Richard and Hannah Meadows!

I looked in the old newspapers and found in the Preston Chronicle 3rd March 1832.

Barnabas Meadows is mentioned in the Lancaster Assizes, he was charged for rioting in Wigan!, it just gave his age as 20, no other info given.

Wondering if this could be Barnabus' father in 1841? He's the only Richard of about the right age to have fathered Barnabus.

Thank you & I know what you mean because I have been thinking along the same lines & thought that this Isaac could be a brother. This Isaac born 1806 was abt 5 years older than Barnabas. He named his son Barnaby. I wondered if it was after his brother and/or his father, although I have not found any record early census or births, for a Isaac son of Barnaby/Barnabas. The name Isaac has not been past on to any of my MEADOWS families. His parents names are spot-on but still no Barnabas. It has filltered down through family that he had a brother Richard born 1814 but know nothing at all about him
I can not find a marriage for Richard and Hannah in the area,(not unusual)

With all the Irish living in the area at that time, they may have come from Ireland ( just a stab -in-the dark )

Thank you so much for your help I have copied these into my notes for Richard & Hannah for future reference. I have another record for Richard March 1/4 1848,Occ' Miller, Ormskirk, Age 83.
IF only I can find Barnabas birth or baptism record I can move forward.

Thank you all for your help and quick response. I am begining to think that he may not have been born in the area. The conviction record does not state anywhere, his place or date of birth. I have been reading about the riots of 1831 and it was noted that many involved where Irish. He married an Irish girl.
Barnabas did his time (7 years) with only 1 punishment ( talking back to the foreman) in the brigg for 3 days on bread & Water. He left Tasmania after his release in 1839 where I found him being married in 1842 in Victoria. He & Mary Fitzgerald had 7 children all of which only 2 survived to adulthood, my gr-gr-grandfather William & one of his sisters. Very sad
