Hi All

I am trying to trace an ancestor Charles Verschoyle Garland born 1821 who married Jane Pinnington in Liverpool.

He was born in Dublin in Ireland. I would love to trace his parents as his middle name is a very interesting one (google). Their Grandson Robert also had Verschoyle as his middle name.

Does anyone know the best way to trace him and his parents in Ireland please?

Charles Garland married Jane Ann Pinnington in the Wirral district in J/F/M 1847 vol19 pg 255.

Does anyone know if you can get copies of marriage certificates from this time? and if so would it give me any details of his parents please?

I can't seem to find a birth record for him in Ireland, but I don't think people were required to register births at this time? or indeed if there were records?

As you have the GRO reference you can order the certificate from the Gro at Southport at a cost of £9-25. The certifricate should, hopefully give you his father's name and occupation and may well also tell you if he was alive or dead at the time of the marriage.

Simone ....thank you sooooo much for finding that info! It will save me the cost of a certificate and the hassle and wait plus it'll make it much easier for me to now try and trace a John Garland in Dublin as Charles father. I am thinking that Charles might have got his Verschoyle surname from it being his mothers maiden name? but have searched irish marriages to no avail, nor can I find any record of Charles birth The search goes on .....................

Does the fact his dad was a gentleman mean that he didn't work/was wealthy?

Hopefully his income should come from the land, so maybe a gentleman farmer.

You may well find that the unusual middle name might have come down a couple of generations, not just from his mother, these things are often carried on.

In the Census' and marriage records I have now seen Charles date of birth as 1881, 1882, 1883 and 1884. I know there are variations dependant on when the census was done but is this normal? Did he just not know when he was born?

Have you seen the marriage certificate and was he literate? ie did he sign his own name.

Birthdays and birthdates weren't as important then as they are to us nowadays and so he may not have known exactly when his birthdate was, especially if it was as you say, around the date of the census which varies a little.

The only thing I can say is that in my own family I have found that when I have managed to find a baptism, it has usually occurred within a day or so of the birth, sometimes even on the day itself.

My gg grandfather was Charles Verschoyle Garland through his first marriage to Jane Ann Pinnington and their son Charles Henry Garland. i have a lot of information abouth this branch but little abt Charles Verschoyle himself. I calculate that we are third cousins once removed!
I live in Christchurch New Zealand and would be pleased to pass on what I have found.
