Help required - Walmsley & Thompson

Post by lorraine.evans »

Hello, I am a new member to this site and as I have ancestors from this area I thought this might be the best place to find help. I am tracing John & Ellen Evans and luckily after browsing through a few posts have already found someone else looking for information on this couple too so am just waiting for the author of the posts to get in touch (although the posts were started in 2009).

I am also looking for Walmsley.
My Grandmother Ann Walmsley was born in 1912, Liverpool.
Her parents were George Walmsley & Ellen (Thompson)
George was born c1877 and Ellen c1879 both Liverpool.
I have found Ellen on the 1911 census with William(1910), George(1907), Ellen(1904) and her father James Thompson b c1857 Clifton,Gloucester. George wasn't living with her that year but on the previous census George was listed as a Gas Stoker on a Steamship and in 1941 (on Ann's marriage cert) he was a Marine Engineer, so I'm guessing George was at sea ?
Other than that I don't have anything else on them.
Any help to find more info on the Walmsley's or Thompson's would be appreciated.
Thanks, Lorraine

Hi and welcome to the forum. If you are able to post a link to the Evans messages we may know whether the original poster is a regular member who pops up on the forum.

Hopefully they will respond to an email anyway.

:D Wow Thank you Mary, I didn't have the marriage info so this is great, hopefully this'll give me a good headstart.
The member who was asking about Evans was Evans11 but couldn't see anything posted after 2009. I have sent a pm and hope he'll be in touch soon.
Thanks you again very much for your help Mary.

The birthplace and birthdate you give for Thomas is worrying me since they don't match the censuses I have found. A few years out is one thing but this is practically a whole decade and the place is wrong too, yet they were living at the correct address in 1901.

I think this is the family in 1891 - again all born Liverpool
1 Commercial Road (Sea View), Kirkdale, Liverpool
James Thompson Head M 46 Dock Labourer
Ellen Wife M 42
John J son 15 Shop Boy
Ellen daur 13
Catherine daur 10 scholar

Thank you Tina, I don't have access to the census' at the moment but can use my local library when I get a bit of time so if you can find anything it will be appreciated :-)
And thanks for all your help Mary, have only just glanced through it (so many new names :D but will read it properly now that my daughter has stopped moaning that she is bored (its only the second day of the holidays). The kettles on and I can now absorb this new information.
Is it just me or do other people get this excited when they find a new name to add to their tree :D
Any idea's where these names are from? I have so many John's, George's and William's that I'm quite thrown now some unusual names have come up.

Sorry to disappoint you but they are from the RC registers so really just normal English names latinicised

Georgius = George
Laurentii = Laurence
Jacobus = James
Joannes = John
Gulielmus = William

You will find that the spellings will vary depending on whether the priest could actually spell them or not.
