Not Merseyside in the strict sense, but on behalf of a friend I am trying to prove or disprove a family story about a young couple who, it is said, went off to Australia and 'disappeared'......
Charles Dagg [bn Ireland 1879] and Sarah Jane Taylor [bn Ireland 1880] got married in County Wicklow on the 2nd of October 1905. It is believed Charles had spent some time in Liverpool but isn't in the 1901. He is not in the Irish 1901 either and is believed to be a mariner. I do not have his marriage cert yet for his 1905 occupation.
Neither Charles nor Sarah appear in the Irish or English 1911s, so it has been assumed they emigrated prior to that census. Their destination, from the family story, was Western Australia and they are not in the outgoing passenger lists from British mainland ports.
So are there any Daggs over there in Tina-territory?

Thanks Ali!
Oh,Oh,Oh, I'm almost all of a dither! Didn't expect anything concrete until the night-shift came on. I passed on the news of the find and it sparked a response/memory. My friend has dug out a newspaper cutting about the 1905 marriage and it says Charles Dagg had been living in Coolgardie, Australia, for a number of years before returning home to marry. Explains why he isn't in the 1911 census. The presumption is that Sarah was his childhood sweetheart! Arrrrh...
Where is Coolgardie?

Thanks to the kind folk here I have been able to track Charles and Sarah Dagg via the local ERs up to 1949.
It appears they had only one surviving child found so far, Marguerite Lilian Dagg bn abt 1908, and who died in 1959 unmarried. I don't yet know when her parents passed but if before her then unless there were other kiddies it looks like 1959 was literally the end of the line.

What a shame and have you had other information "behind the scenes" as it were?

Hi MaryA,
I got a load of info from ER pages via PM and then emailed with the copy pages themselves. Still hoping to find other children though. You never know! Both Charles and Sarah's families were Church of Ireland so I wouldn't expect many kiddies.

Thats great news dickiesam!
Did they give you the rest of the 1916 info?
Its amazing 40years of family information in a matter of hours, very special people on here. Ali
Marguerite was listed living with her parents, dunbar st and a typiste in 1931
Interestingly in 1954 in 9 dunbar st there was a Dorothy Maud and Robert William Dagg he was a truck driver, could he be a son?. Theres other Daggs in other parts of freemantle but not that close
theres only one death reference for Charles Dagg 1951, Perth Western Australia Reg.No. 554
I love the name Dagg, it's such an everyday word here.
Don't be a dagg (not very nice) ....You look a proper dagg (scruffy)
He's so daggy.....she's such a dagg meaning a wag...
Coolgardie was the site and start of the gold rush.
At one time there were 16,000 people there mostly in tents.
The wide streets date back to the time of the Afghan cameleers.
Fantastic museum. About 4 years ago, we were there, I did a look up at the cemetery, my stars...murders, suicides.

How lovely, our Aussie friends being able to tell us something of the ancestry of their homeland.

Thanks Mary!
Coolgardie would have been rough as guts back then for Sarah Jane.
Heat, dust, bush flies, water from a well.
God love her...and giving birth to two babies
Aussies love their Irish pioneer connection.
Off topic, we play Aussies Rules against Ireland, a composite of both games. The blokes from here go over there and doors are opened all over the place. Well, in one team we had Dermot Brereton, Sean McCarthy, Michael Delaney to name a few
To our family, there's a gold rush place in Victoria named Gaffney's Creek.
Rambling again..

Hi everyone,
To say I am staggered is putting it mildly... A couple of days ago I was asked by a friend to try and find out what had happened to a missing 'cousin', Sarah Jane Taylor who had married a local lad Charles Dagg in Wicklow Ireland in 1905. Their families lived within a mile or two of each other. All we knew was their dates of birth and marriage, their parents and siblings. And, Charles wasn't in any of the 1901 and 1911 censuses.
Looks like you have uncovered a real love story...
Charles had already been to WA. He was a farmer's son, but not the eldest by several years so would not inherit the farm. Seem he may have been bitten by the gold fever bug and headed out to Australia before 1901. He comes back, marries Sarah [probably his childhood sweetheart], and they both head for the dusty West of Dunbar Road, Claremont, WA.
My friend is organising a Taylor clan get-together in the next few weeks so this missing piece of the jigsaw is brilliant.
Everybody.. a very big thank you! My g.daughter would say it's "huggies all round time"!

I was going to phone around any Dagg's in the metro area phone book!!
Fingers crossed.
I've looked in W.A.G.S site (no it's not a doggie rescue site ) under surname interests, no Dagg.
I will send an email tomorrow to them.
