Science Museum Exhibition - Liverpool based research

Hello. A slightly unusual request from the Science Museum in London. I am a curator developing a temporary exhibition that will explore our collections in relation to family historians and one exhibit we are working on has several connections to Liverpool. I’m hoping you can help.

For one display we will take an object and investigate all the names associated with it and its contents, and in turn the places and events associated with them. The idea being to generate a network of connections. The object is a doctor’s bag dating from 1890-1930 and this is broadly the period we are interested in.

It once belonged to John Hill Abram (1863-1933) MD and later a Professor at The University of Liverpool and President of the Royal Infirmary. For some 40 years (until 1931) he also had a local practice based at 84 Rodney Street. As well as the Royal Infirmary, he also worked at University College, Liverpool and at Stanley Hospital in the 1890s. The bag is pictured here:

Amongst bag’s contents are a number of other Liverpool associations. As follows:

White & Wright– Surgical Instrument Makers – based at 93 Renshaw Street, Liverpool
Alexander and Fowler – instrument makers and patentees(?) – based at 59A Pembroke Place, Liverpool
Clay & Abraham Ltd – “chemists to the late Queen Victoria” who had several branches in Liverpool, inc. 87 Bold Street, 18 Lord St and 13 Tithebarn St

There’s also a tobacco box from a company called Grundy’s who may have been Liverpool based.

We want to gather images (and stories and anecdotes) that relate to the people and places associated with the bag. As such, we’d like to know more about the individuals named (such as Dr Abram, Messrs Clay & Abraham etc), but also the people with looser links – ancestors who may have worked for these companies during the period (1890-1930) etc etc.

On one level this could be something as central (and probably unlikely) as Dr Abram standing outside 84 Rodney St – but we want to think laterally, so images of say, Wright & White’s workshop sometime in this period, or Alexander & Fowler’s staff on a works outing or the manager of the Bold St branch of Clay & Abraham in Edwardian times etc.

Much of the exhibition will be a ‘co-created’ with family historians, so any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated and could well form part of the final exhibit.

If you think you have something to contribute, please feel free to post here or via the e-mail below.

Many thanks – Stewart, Curator at the Science Museum

Welcome to this forum where there are many willing helpers. I am old enough to remember some of the names you are interested in.
I take it you have googled the names you give. There is a fine photo of Clay & Abraham's shop front offered for sale on an art site - you might be able to use the museum's muscle to obtain a copy. There are also artefacts offered on auction sites.
Are you sure about 'Wright & White' - my memory has them the other way round?
I hope you attract some interest from individuals' descendants and look forward to reading the thread.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I will also bring your appeal to the attention of our Journal Editor and hope that he is able to slot it into the next publication as it may then be read by a wider audience as we have members from all different countries, but not all of them log on to the forum.
