Breakthrough and Brick Wall!

After four years of on-off searching I finally found the marriage of my great great aunt Ann Barker thanks to Anc*** and the Liverpool marriage records. Whoopee! The marriage to Edward John Highton (it says Edwin on the certificate but deffo Edward) took place in 1893. I've found the happy couple in 1901 but then they disappear. Haven't got the Schweppes census yet but have looked in the index - no sign. Edward's family have been easy to trace, good upstanding citizens who all filled in their census forms. I'd love to know if Ann and Edward had any children but looks like I'll have to wait a bit longer. I have found a death for Ann Highton in 1947 but nothing for Edward. Oh well. you win some. you lose some. Just had to tell someone!

Hi Barbara,
Not the news you wanted to hear I suspect... I have sent you a PM.
If your Edward Highton was a 'carpet planner', prompted by the ssshhhh in Schweppes, I found that something sad happened after the 1901:
Death Dec 1903> Highton, Annie - 31 - Toxteth Park - 8b - 148.
Followed by:
Marriage Sep 1905 - W. Derby - 8b - 1029: Highton, Edward John and NEAVES, Mary Ann.
I couldn't find kiddies to this couple up to 1925, so if your g.aunt Annie had children after the 1901 census they were not with their father and his 'new' wife.
Found 10 births in FreeBMD [1901 - 1903] that might be... Can probably eliminate quite a few with a dose of Schweppes. We'll see.

The baptisms for the children North Meols gives are on Ancestry
Ethel May 14 April 1895 St Silas Toxteth park sadly died 1896
Edward James 27 June 1898 St Silas TP died 1898
Annie Louisa 14 June 1899 St Gabriel TP died 1899
I think Annie died 1903 registered TP
I think Edward is there on the unmentionable - his job is a giveaway!! But he has perhaps married again!!
The Phyllis mentioned was born in 1916 so possibly another Highton Barker marriage.

If you go to this site
www.toxtethparkcemetery.co.uk/dbase/toxsearch.htm
You will find the 3 children's burials, Annie's burial in 1903 and Edward's burial in 1915. You could then use Edward's address in 1915 to hoepfully find him in 1911.

These are the 10 children from FreeBMD with my analysis on what happened to them or their whereabouts later on:
Births Sep 1901> HIGHTON, Mary Elizabeth - W. Derby - 8b - 279; Died Sep 1901 [0].
Births Mar 1902> Highton, Reginald Clifford - Liverpool - 8b - 105; Died Sep 1902 [0].
Births Jun 1902:
Highton, Edward - W. Derby - 8b - 440; Died Jun 1902 [0].
Highton, Esther Ellenor - W. Derby - 8b - 413; living with parents later.
Highton, Thomas - Liverpool - 8b - 52; living with parents later.
Highton, William - W. Derby - 8b - 638; Died Sep 1903 [1].
Births Sep 1902:
Highton, Hugh Albert - W. Derby - 8b - 548; Inmate in WD Union, Rice Lane.
Highton, Sarah Ann - W. Derby - 8b - 509; Living with parents later.
Births Dec 1902> Highton, Ellen - W. Derby - 8b - 239; Living with parents later.
Births Dec 1903> HIGHTON, George - W. Derby - 8b - 629; Living with parents later.
I think it would be worth trying to find a baptism for Hugh Albert bn in 1902 to find out who he is. Would his father put him the workhouse when Annie died or when he married again? There might be records available as they would now be outside the 100 year rule. And the baptisms for the children who died could rule them out as being Annie's children.

I agree with you Tina. What a mine of information!
DS I read your PM before I went on the forum so forgive me for repeating what you told me here.
Hilary, Sue and Mary, thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to look up all those births and (sadly) deaths. What a tragedy to lose three children one after the other like that. Poor Annie and poor Edward who seems to have never had a family. I am currently tracing Edward's family and they seem to be a bit more prolific so plenty to go at there!
Once again thanks to all who pitched in and helped.
Best regards
Barbara
