Football Manager Jimmy Hogan

Post by Lou »

Hello,

I am looking to find the address of former Netherlands, Switzerland, Aston Villa and Fulham manager Jimmy Hogan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Hogan

Born: 16 October 1882 in Halifax.

In the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census he is registered in Halifax.

Somewhere after the end of the First World War and 1921, he worked for Walker's Tobacco in Liverpool. Is it possible to find the address of where he lived in Liverpool (if he did live in Liverpool, that is) during this time?

Hi Lou :)
Welcome to the forum.
Quick question, in his Wickie profile it says he was born in Nelson Lancs
not Halifax.
There's a James in 1891 with parents in Nelson.
Perhaps you could list the Halifax census finds please?
Reading his profile, he was in Europe in WW1 then came to Lpool, moved back to Europe.
I doubt if we will find him in Directories folks.
Tks

Hi Tina,
I wonder about that Wiki profile. The only James Hogan bn abt that time is this one..
Births Dec 1882: Hogan, James - Leeds - 9b - 413.
So registered in Leeds but possibly born elsewere.
Then there's this from The Guardian.. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2003 ... t.comment2

Curiously, Hogan himself had taken up football in the early 20th century without family encouragement. His parents had left Ireland to find work in the Lancashire cotton industry. Jimmy's father wanted him to become a priest but football won the argument. In a fairly modest career he played for Burnley, Bolton, Fulham and Swindon as a skilful inside forward. It was a summer tour of Holland with Bolton that persuaded him to take up coaching. Bolton easily beat Dordrecht and he vowed to go back and "teach them how to play". In his early 30s he did indeed return to become the youngest-ever British coach to take up a permanent position on the continent.

So his parents were Irish and in the cotton industry and could be the family at RG12 / 3377 / 44 / 36 in 1891.

Hi Lou,
As Tina has asked, can you post the census reference pages for the years you have a sighting of him as of Halifax?

Sorry, I may have misled you. I think I have made a mistake.

I used the findmypast website but do not have any credits to view records.

I input James Hogan and birth year as 1882 (wiki's year of birth).

These are the results I have from a search, which I thought were correct:

I was going by the distance from Nelson (his first club) so this may be incorrect.

Halifax is the Registration District of the Census.

1891
Household HOGAN, James 1882 9 M Halifax Yorkshire (West Riding)

1901
Household HOGAN, James 1882 19 M Halifax Yorkshire (West riding)
1911
Household HOGAN, James 1882 19 M Halifax Yorkshire (West riding)
There were four James Hogans born in 1882 according to findmypast:

HOGAN James John Greenwich London 1882
HOGAN James Henry South Shields Durham 1882 HOGAN James Blackburn Lancashire 1882
HOGAN James Leeds Yorkshire 1882

I think it is likely that that James Hogan I am looking for is the third one.

Apparently his wife and child/children were in the UK during WWI but I do not know their names. So it could have been possible to find an address that way.

According to a book I have, when he returned to England in 1918, he had not seen his wife/child for near four years so he was married in or before 1914.

Hi Lou,
Assuming your census sightings are correct and James was in Halifax in 1911, he married sometime after April 1911 and the start of WW1.

There are 10 marriages for a James H in that time span and two of them are registered in Halifax.

1) HOGAN, James and BROWN, Phoebe D.
Registration District: Halifax; Yorkshire.
Year/qtr of registration: 1913 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume No: 9A; Page No: 717.

Only one probable child from that marriage up to 1915.
Births Dec 1913: Hogan, Mary [Brown] - Halifax - 9a - 622.

2) HOGAN, James and GREENWOOD, Elsie
Registration District: Halifax, Yorkshire.
Year/qtr of registration: 1913 / Apr-May-Jun.
Volume No: 9A; Page No: 989.

Only one probable child from that marriage up to 1915.
Births Dec 1915: Hogan, Geoffrey [Greenwood] - Halifax - 9a - 608.

Because the birth of the latter child is a year after the start of WW1, I would say marriage #1 is the better bet.

Thanks for your help, but I don't think I'll be able to find anything.

Incidentally, I found that his son was called Joseph, he went on to become a football player in the French and Swiss leagues.

The one in Halifax was actually born in Liverpool so not the one you want

James Hogan born in Nelson with a father James and mother Margaret was living at 38 Victoria St great Marsden Nelson in 1891 and in 1901 218 Padiham Road Burnley.

This the James that ties in with his biographical details
