Hi and welcome to the forum.
We will need you to pin down a few dates and perhaps obtain a certificate or two to confirm parentage etc. but we'll get you started if we possibly can.
If your parents or aunts or uncles are still living, the best thing you can do to start is to speak with them, ask them for any information they know, any memories etc. Do they know if their parents were born in the Liverpool area or elsewhere, do they know their grandmother's maiden name, can they remember their own aunts, uncles, even grandparents etc. Take notes, but if the people you are speaking to are elderly perhaps let them chat and pick up information as you go along without pressuring them with too many questions. Try to discover if they remember the years of deaths of their parents/grandparents.
Hopefully you knew John Couch's birthday and in the Liverpool area and can confirm that your grandfather was born during
Q4 1926 West Derby 8b 828 - this is the reference you would need if you were to order the birth certificate from the GRO - you can do this online at www.gro.gov.uk In this instance, if you are able to confirm that this is him then we may be a step ahead without the certificate as from the index we know his mother's maiden name was Gornell or Garnell.

Here is where more information will be needed
John Couch married Ellen Gornell Q3 1924 Liverpool 8b 395
Unfortunately this marriage is just a little late for us to be able to access records online - some are available by subscription on Ancestry although not all. www.lancashirebmd.org.uk give the marriage as being at Liverpool, Register Office or Registrar Attended. This might mean that it was an RC marriage but unless a family member knew which church it took place in it could be difficult to find the entry at the Liverpool Record Office as it might mean searching a number of church registers.
The information from the certificate is needed as it will give you their ages, occupations and residences, father's names and occupations and a couple of witnesses, who may be related. All essential details to proceed. You can order it through the website I gave above.
With the information from the certificate hopefully you will be able to find the family in the 1911 census which you can search online, although it is pay to view. http://www.1911census.co.uk/
These are your first steps and with the details that you will then have we may be able to get you further through the earlier censuses.

You are also looking for burials - there is the possibility from that marriage above that they were Catholics. They may be buried in one of the RC Cemeteries, Ford, Yewtree or Ainsdale, however, other cemeteries also have RC sections.
You need the dates of death and where they lived to be able to search further.

Couch family
Hi Scouch,
In case you don't have it already here's the marriage of your Couch g.parents:
COUCH, John & KELLEY, Eda.
Registration District: Liverpool North, Lancashire.
Year/qtr of registration: 1952 / Mar.
Volume No: 10D; Page No: 268.
From the John Couch/Gornell 1924 marriage that MaryA found, I estimated John would be around 25 years old and no younger than 18. That would give a YoB between 1906 and 1899. Also since Gornell is an unusual name a search on FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl gave this as a birth..
Births Sep qtr 1901: Gornell, Ellen - W. Derby - 8b - 507.
Her spouse John would probably be around the same age, maybe slightly older....
I found this birth, the only one in Lancashire in the time span [+/- 2 years].
Births Mar 1898: COUCH, John - W.Derby - 8b - 415.
This is a little premature given that we don't yet have confirmation of when he was born or his father's name etc.... but I do 'take a flyer' now and again and this is the only John Couch in Lancashire in 1901 [and the 19** following]. The name Coach is actually on the 1901 census summary page, but is correct as Couch in the later one.
1901:
COACH, Francis - Head - Married - 30 - General Labourer - Liverpool.
COACH, Ann J - Wife - 28 - Liverpool.
COACH, Francis - Son - 6 - Liverpool.
COACH, John - Son - 3 - Liverpool.
COACH, Ann J - Dtr - 1 - Liverpool.
Address: 125 Arlington Street, Kirkdale, Lancashire.
RG13 / Piece:3470 / Folio:32 / Page:11.
The name is also Couch in 1891:
COUCH, Francis - Boarder - U/m - 18 - Driver - Liverpool.
RG12 / Piece:2961 / Folio:72 / Page:39.
A Francis Couch married Ann Jane McManus Dec qtr 1893 - W. Derby - 8b - 511.
In addition to the children in 1901 they had:
George abt 1902
Joseph abt 1905
Charles abt 1911

Well WOW whats skills you have!!
Yes my great grandfather is John Couch 1898, how amazing that you found the information on my great great grandparents. Thankyou.
How do you find all this out? is it just skill or use of certain sites??
I am going to find the date of death for John Couch and Ellen if possible as i would really like to now where they are buried.
As for Frederick Kelley and Sarah Kelley (was wood) i know that she was buried in Everton Cem but do not know how to find out where!!
Story has it my grandma went many years ago to lay flowers and could not find her and got very upset : How long to plots remain??

Hi,
RE:
Given ages are notoriously unreliable. People sometimes didn't know what year they were born, others lied about their age for all sorts of reasons. People shown as husband and wife in a census may not actually be married to each other but have spouses elsewhere. Working class folk simply couldn't afford to divorce, quite apart from any religious 'restrictions'. They might marry a long time after their first child is born when the long-separated spouse dies.
With regard to searching for burials, other members of the crew here will be able to guide you. But first you need to find a death date. With regard to the Kelley family Frederick and Sarah, you need to find their ages to get a YoB. That info will help greatly in identifying a death later.
Using a similar approach to that used to find the Couch family, this is their marriage from FreeBMD:
Marriage Dec qtr 1915 - Liverpool - 8b - 103:
Kelley, Frederick C and Wood, Sarah.
This might be Frederick C... [from FreeBMD]
Births Dec 1888> KELLEY, Frederick Claud - W. Derby - 8b - 269.
In this case I suggest you get the Kelley/Wood marriage cert to confirm their ages and names/occupations of their fathers. Then find a match in the 1891 and later censuses for the son and the father.
Good hunting,
DS
RE:
It's a combination of patience, experience and luck! You learn as you go along especially learning from others. The most important thing is, no matter what sites you use to get information, you should always try to verify the data from the web searches with the actual paper or original documentation. For instance, never accept a transcription of a census without checking the copy of the original. How do you find all this out? is it just skill or use of certain sites??

Good replies from our prof.
Yes please try to pinpoint the dates of death near enough and then if you are in Liverpool you could go to the Liverpool Record Office, currently in the World Museum, William Brown Street, and check the Registers for Everton Cemetery, and all being well you will find the location of the grave and a map to find it.
Sadly the family may not have been able to afford a headstone so that might be why your grandmother may not have been able to find it.
If you would like some hands-on guidance, our Society run a Help Desk at the temporary Record Office on Tuesday afternoons, and they will be able to give you a lot more pointers.

Children from the Kelley/Wood marriage?
Probable children from the Kelley/Wood marriage.
Marriage Dec qtr 1915 - Liverpool - 8b - 103 - Kelley, Frederick C and Wood, Sarah.
KELLEY, Frederick S - West Derby - 1916.
KELLEY, Francis S - West Derby - 1918.
KELLEY, Winifred - West Derby - 1920.
KELLEY, Ethel - West Derby - 1922.
KELLEY, Eda - West Derby - 1926.
KELLEY, Rhoda - West Derby - 1930.
Found this death, looks very much like 'our' Frederick. The age is spot on for the 1888 birth of Frederick Claude Kelley.
Deaths Mar 1941: Kelley, Frederick C - 53 - Liverpool S. - 8b - 415.
He's not listed on the CWGC site so the death doesn't appear to be a result of the Bltz.

Yes Ellen Gornell would be my great grandma.
I have an estimated YOB 1901 so sounds good.
Does it give any further information?
Many Thanks

The society has a Skelmersdale Group which you might be interested in.
If you click on the logo on the left you will get a page with different listings, then click on Groups and then Skelmersdale and you will find out about the group.
If you go along to the meetings you will meet other like minded people and find out more about family history.

I looked in Anc## at the enumerators books, it only states Mr Gornell
97 Cardwell St Edge Hill, shot in the dark??
4 males 2 females. (I did look for Gornall)
I can't divulge anything other than the free list in 19@@ census because of copyright. Liverpool rego.
There is Henry 46, Ellen 44, Michael 17, John 15, Mary 13, James 11, ELLEN 9, Elizabeth 7.
I hope this is of help.
1911 Gores was taken the year before, there is a different person at number 97 Cardwell.
I have the family before Ellen's birth in 1901 census, Everton, if you would like details.

Gornell family
Hi,
Re the Gornell family 10 years after Ellen was born....
I think they were living at House 4, 32 Court, Burlington Street, maybe 32 House, 4 Court.
Anyway, fairly sure this is the family in 1901. Quite hard to find because Henry and Ellen had added about 5 years to their ages when only ten years had elapsed to the next census. But here they seem to have fibbed because this is the only Henry Gorna(e)ll birth in Liverpool that fits. So they reverted to near-correct ages later on.
Births Sep 1864> GORNALL, Henry - Liverpool - 8b - 50.
1901:
GORNELL, Henry - Head - Md - 30 - 1871 - Plasterer's labourer - Liverpool.
GORNELL, Ellen - Wife - 30 - 1871 - Liverpool.
GORNELL, Harry - Son - 10 - Liverpool.
GORNELL, Michael - Son - 8 - Liverpool.
GORNELL, Mary - Dtr - 6 - Liverpool.
GORNELL, James - Son - 2 - 1899.
GORNELL, James - Boarder - U/m - 60 - General Labourer - Wigan.
Address: 2 Court, 2 House, Sheridan Street, Everton.
RG13 / Piece:3482 / Folio:57 / Page:45.
Found a baptism for Michael: ST JOSEPH'S - Yob 1893 - Bapt 1893 - MICHAEL, GORNELL - Parents HENRY & ELLEN GORNELL Nee KELLY.
There also baptisms for other children, same parents, including a John bn 1895 who is missing from the 1901.
Thus: Marriage Sep qtr 1895> Gornell, Henry and Kelly, Ellen - Liverpool - 8b - 358a.

Hello Sarah!
You don't have to start inputting confirmed data into a family history program but I suggest you think about it. With so much info in so short a time it only points to what is out there waiting to be 'harvested'.
Personally, I would tend to follow one line back through a couple of generations. Then give it a rest and start on another line. Otherwise, if you are trying to find out too much at once you could get the dreaded 'Information overload'!
And confusion 'rains'!
To start tracking your namesake Sarah, because she has a relatively common surname, you need to know her age and father's name [and his occupation] to find her in a census. You should get her marriage cert to get that information.

To start tracking your namesake Sarah, because she has a relatively common surname, you need to know her age and father's name [and his occupation] to find her in a census. You should get her marriage cert to get that information.

Hey Tina,
Great post! looks like you may have a nice little sideline going here?
With the aid of that marriage cert you found here's the Wood family in 1901. The witness Joseph Wood was probably Sarah's brother.
1901:
WOOD, Henry - Head - Md - 36 - French polisher - Liverpool.
WOOD, Ann - Wife - 31 - Liverpool.
WOOD, Joseph - Son - 11 - Liverpool.
WOOD, Sarah - Dtr - 8 - Liverpool.
WOOD, Henry - Son - 6 - Liverpool.
WOOD, John - Son - 3 - Liverpool.
POOL, Mary Ann - Mother-in-law - Widow - 68 - Liverpool.
Address: 5 Georges Terrace, Everton, Lancashire.
RG13 / Piece:3480 / Folio:118 / Page:48
Thanks to mother-in-law it should have been easy to find the parents' marriage. But no! So were they married? Has Ann's mother married again? My trusty crystal ball says they were married abt 1889. The only marriage for a Henry Wood is to an Ann Ogden in Chorlton.
However, backtracking to the West Derby birth of an Ann Pool in 1870, the 1871 census has step-children indicating that Mary Ann Pool was previously married to a Lawson and then married John Pool.
Marriages Mar 1866 - West Derby - 8b - 637.
Lawson, Mary A & Pool, John.
So it's looking as though Henry and Ann didn't tie the knot...?
