Hefferston Grange Sanatorium Near Weaverham

Post by Blue70 »

Does anyone have any decent size photos of this institution? It was formerly a country house, later a hospital, then disused, no idea of it's current condition.

The National Archives website says:-

"Hefferston Grange Sanatorium was established by Warrington County Borough in 1921 for the treatment of tuberculosis cases. After 1948 it was administered by its own Hospital Management Committee until 1957, by North and Mid Cheshire HMC from 1957 to 1968 and by South Cheshire HMC from 1968 to 1974. With the reform of the NHS in 1974 it became part of Crewe District of Cheshire Area Health Authority; when that body was abolished in 1982, it passed to Crewe District Health Authority. In 1983 it had 84 beds, principally for geriatric patients."

Warrington Borough Council have a Flickr site but I can't see anything on there. Perhaps s direct enquiry might bring a result? http://www.warrington.gov.uk/home/leisu ... l_history/

I think an enquiry to the Cheshire FHS or Cheshire Archives might be productive, although we think of Warrington as being in Lancashire it has many connectins to Cheshire.

Hi Blue
Hefferston Grange was knocked down about 20 years ago and a number of houses were built on the site, I don't have a photo but I will ask around, I live in Weaverham.
Regards
Val

There is a photo of a Hefferston Grange on the Geograph website:
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1773452
and an entry for it as a listed building, via Google, but I have no local knowledge.

Thanks Daggers and Val.

My Grandad's brother had Tuberculosis and died at Hefferston Grange in May 1939. Cheshire Archives have no patient records available only a scrapbook from a later period of it's history.

Hi Blue
I know this is a longshot but I spotted you have the names Holland and Reeves and enquiring about Hefferston Grange. Would the Holland relate to Elsie Holland who used to live in Gorstage (Weaverham) if so did she marry Ernest Reeves?. I am trying to find a John Holland born about 1938-1941 and his mother was Elsie Holland who may have worked at Hefferston Grange.

Many thanks

Hi Bodkin,

Welcome to the forum. No sorry the Holland concerned was Patrick Joseph Holland 1912-1939 he died of TB at this sanatorium. My Hollands and Reeves are Liverpool families they don't have any links with Cheshire. My Hollands came to Liverpool from Ireland c1879 and my Reeves from Overton, Flintshire, Wales c1850.
