Hi All
I received the papers concerning my Great Uncle this morning, he died at the above hospital in 1917. Does anybody have any idea where someone who died there would be buried and on his admission card his address prior to Brownlow Hill was given as Main Bridewell, 77 Stanley Road, Liverpool. I assume it is Stanley Rd Bootle, it is the main bridewell bit that is confusing me, can anybody shed any light on it. As Mary A said a few posts back there was a photo of him.
Regards

A Bridewell was a prison. the Main Bridewell for Liverpool was in Cheapside.

77 Stanley Road Bootle is now a hairdressers a few years before 1917 it was a private house.

The Main Bridewell bit implies admitted from the Police prison in Liverpool but the 77 Stanley Road bit has me puzzled.

Hi Hilary
Looking at the form again it looks as though it could be Main Bridewell & 77 Stanley Road, in the previous column which is titled address for death notice it has his father's name and 77 Stanley Road with no mention of the main bridewell. He had been in the workhouse @ Brownlow Hill since 1901, perhaps he had attacked someone there and had been taken to the Bridewell before being sent to Rainhill. Is 77 near the Scotland Rd end or the North Park End? It is a while since I was in Bootle and I'm trying to picture it.

77 is definitely not the Scotland Road end, it's on the corner of Keble Road not far from Hugh Baird College. If I remember right, the bridewell was further toward Scotland Road, on the other side of the road and not far from the old hospital, not far from Orwell Road, but somebody might correct me on that.

Hi Val,

My Great Grandfather Richard Montrose died in Rainhill Hospital in 1937 and he was buried in West Derby Cemetery which was local to were his Family lived, so it looks as though he's been taken from the Hospital and buried at West Derby, probably at the wish of his Family. I think the nearest public Cemetery to Rainhill is St Helens.

I hope this helps,

Roy

Can't help wondering, when you say you received your great uncle's papers, are you referring to medical records from Rainhill Hospital? My mother was a patient there and I didn't know it was possible to obtain records. I thought the hospital had closed. Any help would be most appreciated

Hi Diane
Sorry not to acknowledge your question have been on holiday, I do seem to have all the records of my Great Uncle from Rainhill and a photo, the records aren't particularly detailed but they do give the gist of his problems
