My sister was born in Liverpool in 1949 and the address of birth is shown as 2A Parkfield Road. Our parents (both deceased) address at time of birth is shown as Jermyn Street which was their home address.

We believe that the Parkfield Road address may have been a Maternity/Nursing Home. Can anyone provide any other details for which my sister would be very grateful. The family moved to Ireland a few years after my sister's birth. Thank you.

Hi Bella

Welcome to the forum. The property doesn't seem to have been a caring establishment on the old census returns. Some of the forum members may be able to find this address on later directories to help you determine it's use when your sister was born there.

Hi Bella,

1938 Directory has at 2a Parkfield Road James Belford - Director, He was a director for (Jas Procter & Son Ltd) Corn Millers.

I have a friend who has a 1949 directory I will ask if they will look it up for you.

The 1968 Kelly's Directory has nothing at all for 2, 2A or 4. The lowest number shown is 6.
2 & 2A should be at the Ullet Road end of Parkfield. Perhaps it was empty or demolished by then?

I often wonder if a mum to be went to the midwife's house/premises instead of the other way around, in which case it wouldn't be registered as a maternity or nursing home but just a quiet place, perhaps away from the family where she could give birth. Anybody any thoughts on this?

2A Parkfield Road, Aigburth.

Hi Bella,
2A Parkfield Road is still there at L17 8UH. Just off Ullett Road on the southern side of Princes Park, it appears to be a fairly large premises containing 7 flats, all occupied. Judging by the ages of the tenants in the Electoral Rolls it is normal flatland accommodation, not 'sheltered' accommodation.

Google Earth has a very good view of it. Just key in the post code. Jermyn Street is on the other side of Princes Park at L8 2XA.

I think the building was originally a small maternity unit. Both my children were born in a similar small unit in Bromborough back in the late 50s. That building has since been converted into small 1 and 2 bed flats.
