I have read that this is online, possibly on Ancestry. If anyone has tried it, can they say how the search is done? Can you put in a name and hope it will throw up the answer you want, or do you have to seach year by year?
The answer[s] will help me and save much time when I next do an Anc search at the library!

I have indeed done it and the search is somewhat similar to searching the censuses. If you have a name and date of death you might be lucky if there was a will. What name and date are you searching for? If we can establish whether there is an entry it might save you some time since you will need to request the copy from Lancashire Record Office in Preston.

I've got some of these probate records your person's information if found will probably be shown on an A4 size page. There will likely be about 30 different records displayed in a two column format. Here is an example showing just the top two:-

Thanks for the replies. I have quite a number to look up, but will probably not need the wills. It is one way of checking on death dates, as I think the Calendar has enough personal details to show what I want. It could be cheaper than death certs!

I have a suspicion that some years are missing!

My 2 greats grandmother left a will probate 1900 at Liverpool - I have a copy of this will and it has the date of probate stamped on it. However she doesn't appear on the Ancestry index it does appear in the index as I've seen it at Preston. I've searched for her with no Christian name only surname and there seems to be a bit of gap 1899 - 1903. I tried on a surname that would come before and still nothing for those dates. If anyone has found anyone for the dates 1899 - 1903 I'd like to know.
