Garland Descendents

I am looking for any decedents of the following people all children of Julia Neil (1864 -1948) a midwife who married three times. George Barker then Thomas Roberts and finally James Garland. They lived at 449 Mill Street Liverpool and then moved to Desford Road. I already have the 1901 and 1911 census. I have two address’s below and wondered if it is possible to find out names of other adults living there.

Julia Barker 1883 have found no marriage for her but possible death record aged 24 Toxteth Park March 1908

Georgina Barker 1885 possible marriage to Harry Knowles 1913

Thomas Harold 1887 known as Harold (born Roberts but possibly using the name Garland)

James Herbert Garland 1891 known as Bert, and possibly killed in the war but can find no record of it. His last address 14 or 24 Dingle Mount in 1916 this is on his brothers war records (Frank William Garland who died in France)

Stanley Garland 1896 on 1901 census marked as deaf and dumb possible marriage in March 1934 to Doris Whitehouse. May have had something to do with the church?

Sydney Schroder Garland 1902 possible marriage in Sept 1933 to Brenda F Brotherton at Mossley Hill St. Matthew with St. James. Lived at 2 Rangemore Road Liverpool 18 in 1948 (on his mothers death certificate)

Any help appreciated

We have tried to collect a few suggestions about tracing living relatives here

As for the addresses, you should be able to check the electoral registers at the Liverpool Record Office although I'm not sure they will be on microfilm at those dates, so they may be held at the satellite in Sandhills, check here for fuller information http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=9679
Georgina Barker 1885 possible marriage to Harry Knowles 1913
A child to this marriage is Ada A L Knowles Q2 1914 West Derby 8b 1158

The only way to be sure if they belong to your family is to check the marriage certificates/parish register to see who the father is.

I will send you a pm.

Hello LindaG,
I suggest you should first make sure those 'possible' events are actually about the people you are looking at by obtaining the relevant certificates. The marriage cert will confirm the fathers' names and occupations. The same applies to 'possible' deaths.

In the marriages we could be 'chasing' the wrong children. For instance, there were 15 births to a Knowles nee Barker mother between 1913 and 1935, and 7 up to 1925 including just one in Lancashire:
KNOWLES, Ada A L - West Derby - 8B - 1158 - Jun qtr 1914.

It look as as though she probably married Frederick G Lambert in 1935 - Chester, Cheshire - 8A - 1248 - Sep qtr. There would appear to have been at least 4 children from that marriage, all registered in Runcorn, between 1935 and 1950. I can't put their names here because they may well still be alive.

Edit: I think I can add this because the person is no longer living..

RE:

The 'possible' death is 99.99% certain to be the right one. This is the only Lancashire Julia Barker birth 1881 to 1885:
Births Mar 1883> Barker, Julia Ann - Toxteth Park - 8b - 259.

Followed by:
Deaths Sep 1908> Barker, Julia Ann - age 24 - Toxteth Park - 8b - 116.

Thank you both once again for you very quick replies, and advice. I need to get to Liverpool for some marriage certificates. I would think you are right Dickiesam about Sydney's death, he has such an unusual name (his granmothers maiden name was Schroder)

Hi,
I think you will find it quicker and simpler to order the certs online direct from the GRO here:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certi ... efault.asp

You will need the full GRO reference, such as:
Marriages Mar qtr 1934> Garland, Stanley Joseph and Whitehouse Doris - Liverpool - 8b [Volume] - 1 [Page].

Certs take about 5 to 7 days and cost £9.25 each including postage.

Hi Linda,
Just a note about that death of Sydney Schroeder Garland I found. With that middle name it has to be the one in your post.

If you got his death cert it will tell probably tell you his occupation prior to retirement. It will definitely tell you when and where he died, the name and address of the informant and their relationship to the deceased.

There would appear to be no children from his marriage to Brenda F Brotherton, at least within England and Wales. Interested in what the F stood for I checked for a birth between 1895 and 1915. This was the only one: Births Jun 1905> Brotherton, Brenda Forster - Middlesbro' - 9d - 575.

There were no deaths 1975 - 2006 for Brenda F Garland.
