I'm probably staring at the obvious but can't find it. This entry is in the Poll Book 1832
REGAN,PETER,VICTUALLER,LEIGH STREET,LIVERPOOL,E & T

Headings read Surname: Forename(s): Occupation: Address: District: Politics: Status

So everything is fairly straightforward, even Politics seems to be E = Mr Ewart

But what does the T for status stand for?

PS Leigh Street is off Basnett Street and Parker Street, I don't suppose anybody has any directories for the 1830's that would identify which number Leigh Street, or which pub this might have been. In earlier years he was at the King's Arms, 52 Whitechapel, but he died in May 1835. I'm trying to find out who took over the pub as I've had difficulty discovering if his wife was still living - by the way he was 73 when he died so she, Mary Regan, would have been quite a decent age.

Mary, I don't think this is much help, but in the 1860 Gores at 5 & 7 Leigh Street was the Queens Head, licensee John Hudson

1843 there is nothing listed, pub wise, for Leigh St.

1821 nothing at all.

Not sure if there is another directory for the 30's, hope so for your sake

No idea about the T either.

Just looked at the Poll Book and maybe the T stood for Thornley as he and Ewart were both Liberals and it does say E&T at the end of the Regan entry.

He wasn't at Leigh Street as early as 1822, but thanks for looking, I have his marriage in 1822 where he was stated as being "late of Red Cross Street" but his wife Mrs Hiscock was "of the Kings Arms, Whitechapel".

He was victualler at the Kings Arms in the 1824 Baines, but I'm more interested in his wife.

Peter Regan married widow Mary Hiscox in 1822. Mary Hiscox was one of the Executors of the Will of Thomas Lunt earlier that year.

To give you a little smile, the exerpt from the Liverpool Mercury on Friday, December 7, 1821 reads

Whereas some evil designing person or Persons have circulated Reports prejudicial to the Character of Mrs Mary Reed; particularly, that I, the undersigned, should have asserted, that, during her residence and employment under me, she had robbed me of Certain Sums of Money, to the amount of Three Hundred Pounds and upwards. Now, I do hereby declare, that I never used such an expression, nor have I any grounds for such Accusation, and that the party circulating this unfounded Report is guilty of a Gross Falsehood. And I further certify, that the said MARY REED, during her abode with me, has conducted herself honestly, and in every respect with great propriety.

So you see Thomas Lunt knew Peter Regan fairly well I'm assuming.

I've been hoping that Mary was related somehow to Thomas Lunt, maybe a sister, but I can't find marriages to prove it and I haven't found a baptism for a Mary Lunt with the same parents as Thomas ie born 1779 to Richard and Margaret baptised in All Saints, Childwall.

Have been looking again at these poll books, never really having had the necessity to do so before.

I do think E & T do stand for Ewart and Thornley, quite a lot of people have that after their names and I think it's all todo with their politics.
Sandon and Douglas were the conservatives and many people have S & D.
