William Bennett, clockmaker, 1840, 50s

In the 1841 census William Bennett is in Russell Street, with wife Alice Eleanor (nee Fletcher). The 1851 census says he was born in London. After this he does not appear with his wife's census entries, though she is 'married' until 1881 and 'widow' in 1891. Alice died in 1904 and was buried at Rake Lane where three adult children share the grave, with no sign of William.

My relative who is seeking traces of William would like to know if there are any signs of him in directories, or elsewhere. I have led her to the clock- and watchmakers database referred to by Pegasus on this forum a few weeks ago, and to the same post which mentions a William Bennett, Watchmaker, but I cannot get any further.

Ideas, anyone?

Please could you post the census entries.

When was he born?

When and where was he married and what are the details on the marriage certificate?

Is this in Liverpool? can you give the references please and his date of birth? Does the 1841 census say No to the "Born in County" column?

As I'm asking here on behalf of someone else, I'll have to find these out - I do not have the details yet.

Bit confused here re Clockmaker!

In 1843 Gores there is
William Bennett Book keeper at 7 Russell St

There is a William Bennett Watch finisher at 13 Claremont Place, Kirkdale

William Bennett Watch-cap maker at Cartwright Place, 44 Byrom St
Shop Canning building, 14 South John St.

So was William a book keeper in 1843 and went on to be a watchmaker?

In 1860 Gores
There is a
Edward Bennett Watchmaker 13 Gt Homer St.

No William Bennett tho'

Cheers
Erika :D

Definitely need the 1841 census page reference to find them in Russell Street...

Based on Alice Eleanor's death in 1904 in Birkenhead where she is said to be 90 years old, her DoB would be around 1814. I have found only this one so far for Wm and Alice Bennett in Liverpool in 1841 [her birth year +/- 5]:

BENNETT, Wm - 28 - 1813 - Stone mason - bn Lancs.
BENNETT, Alice - 28 - 1813 - bn Lancs.
Address: York Place, Copperas Hill, Liverpool.
RG number: HO107 - Piece:560 - Book/Folio:13/24 - Page:41.

The confusion was why I asked, could only find William and Elinor, who was a bookkeeper. Maybe the person requesting has better details ..... we await more info.
