Hi , Brand new to researching ancestry, so could do with some pointers in how to go about finding out where my ancestor was buried. He died in the Liverpool workhouse on Feb 1st 1907. Was there a special burial ground for Workhouse inmates? He was a lay preacher, Baptist I think originally from Wales. Rather puzzling is that his address is given on the death certificate as 61 St Ann Street. Liverpool. I would not be able to follow up any leads in person in Liverpool itself so I will be limited to email, internet sites or good old fashioned snail mail.
Could I thank you in advance for any help that gets me moving forward in my search.

Could you give us a name and age of your ancestor please?

Which Workhouse was your ancestor in?

Workhouses also had hospital facilities, so maybe he was just in the hospital and not an inmate.

I had a look at the 1901 census and the 1911 Liverpool Directory (on CD) and 59-61 St Anne Street was a lodging house.

I assume that from where he was residing he will have died in Liverpool Workhouse at Brownlow Hill, The registers are on microfilm at Liverpool. The cemetery that inmates will have been buried in would be Anfield or the Parochial Cemetery Walton, or he could have been took back to were he was born.

Of course the person could have gone back to place of birth for burial, I found out that one of my distant relatives that was born in Flintshire, but died in Chester was sent back to Overton for burial.

Many thanks, Jan and Katie, for your information. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. You have made more progress in my research than I have in the last two months!
If it will help to identify the workhouse, his death certificate was signed by the govorner as , it looks like, M or W Bray. His name was Hezekiah Rees, (B.1846 D.1907) who sailed from Aberporth in Cardiganshire to Liverpool on a paquet boat, when aged 17, to obtain work in the cloth trade. I believe he became a draper. It was lucky for me that his christian name was Hezekiah, because in the 1901 census his surname was spelt RESS and on his death certificate it was spelt REECE.

William Bray was the Governor of Brownlow Hill Workhouse.

I found him listed there in the 1911 Directory.

Whilst at Liverpool today I had a few spare minutes so looked up his entry in the Workhouse

Had a quick look in Anfield Non Conformist section and Kirkdale not there.

You will have to access Walton Parochial records at the archives in Sandhills as they are not on microfilm.

Very well done Katie, that was very kind of you to look that up.

I will see if I can find anything on the K Richards of 50 Radcliffe Street.

One thing I was going to suggest for Crindau to contact Allerton Cemetery, I think they have all the Liverpool burial registers there, but I think they charge £10 per look-up.

I checked the 1901 census for 50 Radcliffe Street Everton, there was nobody Richards living there.

I was wondering could the K Richards have been a W as in 1891 Hezekiah was lodging in Cobden St also with him was a William Richards aged 48 same occupation a Draper..so they proberbly worked together and both being single good mates.

In 1901 William was living at Severs Grove Everton.

I must thank you yet again for bending your knowledge and expertise to solve my quest. I will follow the invaluable pointers you have given me, which have saved me an inordinate amount of time, thrashing about aimlessly in the whole new world to me, of the dead but not forgotten!
Tomorrow I shall phone Allerton Cemetery Lodge to enquire the procedure for looking up a burial record,also make enquiries about obtaining access to the Walton parocial records. Thank you for checking the kirkdale and Anfield records, sometimes a negative can be a huge positive! The K Richards of 50 Radcliffe Street is a complete mystery, not his wife, and nowhere (so far) in Hezekiahs tree.
So I will let you know how I get on in the next few days.

Sorry I missed your post about K (W) Richards. Your detective work sounds very plausible indeed. I will have to give the 1891 census a closer look. It looks as if Hezekiah, died without any next of kin.
Katie found out that he was admitted to the workhouse in 1901. All his life he suffered with Bronchitis, and his parents expressed concern for his health in some of the letters I have. He mostly wrote about sermons he was planning for the following Sunday and how considerate the man he worked for was. His death certificate states cause of death as Chronic Bronchitis ...which doesn't come on overnight. If he was ill in the Workhouse hospital for six years from1901 to1907 he would have needed a "good mate" as you say,just to cheer him up!

Jan44, Katie, colette and Tina,from a grateful Crindau. Thanks to all your efforts and suggestions, I have finally tracked down where Hezekiah was laid to rest.
I received an email from a Mr. Roger Hull of the Liverpool libraries service today. He sent me a copy of relevant page of the register of burials at the Parochial cemetery Rice Lane Walton. It shows that he was buried there on Feb 5th 1907. Mr Hull suggests that it would most probably been a in a communal grave, as that was the common practice of workhouse burials at that time. He is also going to send me a plan of the cemetery.
It might be useful if I recount the process which provided me with the success you all share in. I telephoned the number you gave me for Walton Cemetery Lodge. They said they no longer delt with my specific request. They gave me the number of the Central Library ..0151 2335817. They in turn, gave me an address to write to , enclosing a fee of Ten pounds
