Mary Hannah Campbell

Post by egandy »

Last week Margaret Lomax sent me an obituary notice from the WWN in 1950 for Mary Hannah Campbell, who died in 1949 age 92, leaving seven children, 31 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren after three marriages. (Wright, Simaniatys, Campbell)

My interest is that Mary Hannah Stevens (maiden name) was the elder sister of my great grandmother Elizabeth Stevens, who after a divorce and remarriage in the 1890's seems to have disappeared from all records.

Does anyone know of any members of the Campbell family who still live in Widnes and could possibly throw some light on the fate of Elizabeth? Possibly also the Starkey family, descendants of Agnes Campbell and Andrew Starkey.

Cheers

Perhaps you could give a few more specific details.

Elizabeth divorced who and do you have the documentation from the National Archives about the divorce? Then she married who and when and where please? and where did she live, perhaps the reference from one of the census entries would help.

Who is Agnes Campbell? perhaps the daughter of Margaret? what date of birth and what details do you have for her marriage?

I know this information doesn't relate to your query re Campbell descendants but you know our crew tend to try help in many different directions.

Mary Hannah Campbell/Elizabeth Stevens/Gandy/Keeling

Post by egandy »

Hi again, more details
Elizabeth Stevens was born abt 1859 in Penketh to Mary Lomax and William Stevens, and married my great grandfather Isaac Gandy in 1877. Her parents ran the Van Trompen beerhouse in Marsh Street, West Bank. Isaac and Elizabeth lived in Waterloo Street with son/my grandfather William Stephen born 1877.
Isaac moved to Victoria British Columbia in abt 1882, leaving Elizabeth and son with her parents. Isaac divorced Elizabeth in the BC High Court in Victoria in 1892 citing neighbour Thomas Keeling. Elizabeth then married THomas Keeling from Alton Staffs in 1893. Thereafter I have found no records of her. But I think we have found her husband Thomas Keeling in Alton, where he died in 1932, possibly leaving four children which could have been Elizabeths, but not yet confirmed.
See also website www.gandy.st about the Gandy family, Isaac in Widnes and Penketh, Victoria and also Thomas Keeling.
Descendants of Elizabeth's older sister Mary Hannah Stevens is one line of enquiry. Her daughter Agnes Stephens Campbell b 1897 d 1980 married Andrew Starkey b 1897, d 1977 of 21 Sinclair Ave and had three children: John, Mary & Agnes Starkey. Dates unknown.

I have found the entry for the marriage of Thomas Keeling to Elizabeth STEVENS in Q2 1893 Prescot 8b 1058.

For background it's worth noting the 1891 census entry because of the mixture of birthplace and surnames.

There is only one marriage for the Starkeys in Prescot, I wonder if they have moved. I won't publish the entry that I found as obviously these people may still be living but would suggest that you might post in local newspapers. We have tried to collect a few online suggestions together here

and googling for Widnes newspapers (as I don't know them myself) there are a couple of suggestions that might prove useful for you

Hello to all who responded to my query about the Campbell and Stevens families. Very useful and generous.

Apologise for non-response due to earlier illness.

Regards
