Swain/Alexander marriage

Post by gayna »

Last month I had a very nasty shock!

I thought the parents of John SWAIN (1798) were Thomas and Betty/Elizabeth Waller BUT I now find that I could be wrong which makes my whole tree suspect. The lady who contacted me seems to be correct.

I am sure about John SWAIN 1798 - 1844. I know he married Jane Alexander (1795 IOM) at Christ Church, Hunter St. 1823. That is all written down in our family bible which started with his marriage to Jane.

If his parents aren't Thomas SWAIN and Betty WALLER who are they?
There was another Thomas SWAIN who married an Ellen Grace 1794 at St. Ann's and he seems to have had a brother John who also married in St Ann's two years before but I cannot find any other info on these people anywhere.

The names John, Thomas, William, George, Ellen and Mary seem to run consistantly through the tree - if that is any help to anybody.

Has anybody got any good ideas please   any morsel will be gratefully received.

Hello Tina,

Thanks for all that info. I agree the spelling goes from with an e or without whatever the vicar or census taker thought of at the time!!

What I am looking for are the parents of John SWAIN/E or even some brothers and sisters.

I have spent years putting together this tree and now I'm out on a limb.

www.lan-opc.org.uk have a baptism at St Nicholas Liverpool of a John Swain son of Thomas and Elizabeth Swain. John was born 20 Nov 1786 and christened 10 Dec 1786. The family lived at Dennison Street and Thomas was a cordwainer.

It might help if you post the evidence you have that led you to believe John was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth and the evidence that the other searcher has that leads them to believe your John isn't the son of Thomas and Elizabeth.

The John Swain born in 1786 appears to have died in 1815 his burial being on lan-opc

31 Dec 1815 John Swain 29 years of Dennison Street buried at St Peter Liverpool

This John appears to have married Jane Dobson a month before he died

I think this could be your John's burial 11 Feb 1844 at St Nicholas John Swain aged 46 years of Ray Street.

John Swain marriage

Post by dickiesam »

Hi,
Just a note!
On the LOPC site the spouse of Jane Alexander in the 1823 marriage was shown as John Lewis. I have reported the error and it has been accepted. The change to Swain will be made asap.

Swain

Post by gayna »

Hello Education Officer,

John, son of Thomas and Elizabeth 1786 - 1815 was the John I had thought was mine until I found his death date which made me look again.
Then I found he had the 'wrong' wife. And now I have met through Ancestry the g. g. g. grand-daughter of Thomas Swain of Denison St. who obviously got her facts straight and I can't dispute them.

My John is definitely the man who died 1844 and he had lived in Ray St. As it states that he was 46 when he died that makes his birth 1798 not 1786.

Thanks to all who are trying to help me.
