Vauxhall Road

Hallo all, it's been a while but I'm back.

Turns out I have a couple of long gone half-uncles but the one I'm interested in is the one that died at 214 Vauxhall Road in 1927. His mother the informant (my grandfathers first wife, no relation) is listed as living in 16 Portland St.

Google mapping led me to a patch of grass next to The Grapes but I could be wrong but I did find a reference here http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Liverpool/Vau ... -1844.html which seems strange. (Circa 1839)

Can someone help me out here with the history of 214 Vauxhall Road? Was it a house, a poor house, a hospital....?

In anticipation, many thanks,

Paul

Hello Paul,
At the time of the 1881 and 1891 censuses #214 Vauxhall Road is shown as unoccupied.

I think it may have been a lockup shop in '81 and '91 that had living accommodation added before 1901. In 1901 it seems to have been a residence and a small sweet shop. It was occupied by:

SPRAY, Jane F - Head - Married - 30 - Shop Keeper (Sweets), at home - Liverpool.
HARRISON, Elizabeth A - Boarder - u/m 17 - Packer, Tobacco Factory - Liverpool.
Address: 214 Vauxhall Road, Liverpool.
RG13 / Piece:3411 / Folio:36 / Page:1.

About 10 years later it was just a residence.

One of the crew will no doubt tell us when it was demolished; possibly during Hitler's attempts to wipe Liverpool off the map. There has been major development in that area since WW2.

214 Vauxhall Rd not listed in 1938 Gores/Kellys Directory.
Can't look for a person as we have no info.

Hi Carole,
RE:
214 is not listed
There's an indexing error. 214 is actually indexed as 314. Looking at the image for #212 then going to next image will bring up #314 but the page itself is signed off as #214.
