Could his name have been James Bernard Gribbin? If yes and he was born in Bootle on 18 March 1883 you can find his Royal Naval Records on the National Archives website.
Go to
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Then click on RECORDS
Then on the right hand side you will see Documents on line click on this
Then on the right you will see Register of Seamen's services click on this
In the search box that then appears put Bernard Gribbins and you will get one hit.
It will cost you £3.50 to download his RN records which will list all the ship's he served on and their dates. It's only one page but helps fill out the story of our families. Knowing his ships you will be able to find out what he was doing during the war.
