SARAH CYNTHIA DALTON OF BOOTLE
Posted: 18 Oct 2010 20:33
by ashley_ball
My Great Grandma was Sarah Cynthia Dalton, born 1891 in Bootle. Her birth certificate lists her parents as Richard Dalton and Mary Ann Coppock.
Richard's father, I believe was an Edward Dalton, but on the census returns, a Richard is living with his mother Jane on Olivia St, Bootle and she is listed as married and head of the household. However, there is an Edward Dalton, born Co.Carlow,Ireland lodging nearby.
I haven't been able to find proper evidence to prove that this is his father, but the dates would match up, he is, however, listed as unmarried.
Apologies for my facts being sketchy, but if anybody can help me out, I'd be grateful.

You need to find Richard's marriage to Mary and obtain that marriage certificate as that will tell you the couple's father's names. Unfortunately so far I've failed to find the marriage!

The County Carlow Edward is on the 1881 visiting in Grosvener St and your Edward is at his mothers house so not the same man.
There is one in Brownlow Hill workhouse in 1891 ages 50 says born Liverpool..Now there were two Edwards born Liverpool 1843 and 1844 but there are also two deaths 1845 and 1847 so looks like these two boys may have died.. so we can take them out of the picture and maybe this is your Edward he may have been ill and thats why hes there he does die later on that year..
Thomas Dalton Edwards Father born Downholland 1809 possibly the son of a Thomas Dalton & Jane Darwin

Hi,
Would you post the census page reference for young Sarah in 1901 please. Like Hilary, I can't find a Richard Dalton marrying anyone between 1875 and 1900! It is possible that he and Mary Coppock never married.
Did find a Richard and Mary A Dalton family in Bootle that might be the one in 1891 at RG12 / 2970 / 52 / 31. But by 1901, Richard has died and the family appear to be in Manchester > RG13 / 3756 / 13 / 17.

If I have the same family as Dickiesam I believe that this might be a second marriage/relationship for Mary A.
2 Delaware, Bootle - All born Lancashire Bootle
Richard Dalton Head M 30 Dock Labourer
Mary A Wife M 37
Alice J? daur 14
Richard son 5 Scholar
William son 2
Henry B Brown Cousin S 32 Dock Labourer
Sarah Green Visitor 26
Sarah ? Dalton daur
Could be worthwhile investigating either Henry Brown or Sarah Green, but I suspect the main clue is Alice who at 14 years old I don't believe will be Richard's child.

Maybe we have the wrong family altogether, I believe the family that Dickiesam and I have been looking at may be found in Chadderton in 1881 RG11; Piece: 4089; Folio: 5; Page: 3.
Perhaps Ashley could perhaps give the address from the birth certificate and also the details from Sarah Cynthia's marriage certificate to help us.

That's the one Mary. The 1901 Manchester family has all the same children named with matching ages. And because of Alice's age I thought the mother had been married before and perhaps was still married, which would explain the absence of Dalton/Pollock marriage. Unfortunately there are a lot of Mary A Coppocks getting married in the right time frame.
If Richard's YoB is abt right in the 1891 [1861], this should be his death:
Deaths Dec 1895 > Dalton, Richard - 34 - W. Derby - 8b - 242.

I'm struggling to locate her birth certificate at the moment, but her death certificate says she was born on the 27th August, 1890.

That matches the birth index, she was registered in Q4 1890.
But the information from the birth certificate might well be crucial since it was fairly close to the 1891 census and might confirm the address, also the other information might be useful ie who registered the birth and their address.
All information from her marriage certificate would be great too.

Hi Ashley,
Given the DoB at death, this looks like her birth:
Births Dec 1890 > Dalton, Sarah Cynthia - W. Derby - 8b - 374.
And an 1891 census search produces the one we found earlier with a Sarah 'S' Dalton. Perhaps someone spelled Cynthia Synthia?
It would be a good idea to search the 1911 for her. Might tie in with the 1901 census result we found in Manchester. Have sent you a PM.
