Hello,
I'm descended from a JAMES STOTT (born 1822 in Whiston or Prescot), sorry but details of his parents are sketchy.
Anyway, by 1881, he is living on Worsborough High Street, and listed as a coal miner. Strangely enough, looking at the rest of the street, a lot of the head of households were also born in Whiston, including more Stotts who were living next door, who I am yet to confirm whether they were related and Swifts (who share the surname of James' wife!)
The link with coal mining must be there somehow. But it's strange that they all moved to the same place.
Is there any record of a re-location? Or is this purely co-incidence?
MASS MIGRATION FROM WHISTON TO BARNSLEY?!
Whiston was a coal mining community up to 1902 when the main Collieries were closed. In 1914 Cronton Colliery was opened which brought back employment to the coal miners who were laid of with the shutting down of the colleries. They may have moved to Barnsley for work as if I am correct Yorkshire was also a mining community. Prior to the opening of St Nicholas Whiston in 1872 anyone born in Whiston were baptised at St Mary's Prescot or they may be non conformist. The Peter Stott living next door could be the son of James Stott. You need to work back and establish the relationship of Peter and James. Looking through the 1881 census it loooks to me as if they are living near a colliery. The surname name Stott is a old Whiston name.

Thanks guys,
Barnsley was indeed a coal mining community, right up until Thatcher's government.
The Stott family lived on and two of them died in the Barnsley public hall disaster. The Stotts being the only family to have lost two children in it.

James Stott
Re James' parents..
1841:
STOTT, Willm - 50 - All born Lancashire.
STOTT, Margaret - 50.
STOTT, Ellen - 20.
STOTT, Anne - 20.
STOTT, James - 20.
STOTT, Elizth - 15.
STOTT, Willm - 10.
STOTT, Jane - 8.
STOTT, Thoms - 6.
STOTT, Ann - 4.
Address: Prescot Hall, Prescot.
RG number: HO107 - Piece:516 - Book/Folio:14/40 - Page:27.
While it is possible that Ellen, Anne and James are triplets it is much more likely that their ages are the same because of the rounding down rule in the 1841. Anyone aged between 20 and 24 would be recorded as 20.

Re: MASS MIGRATION FROM WHISTON TO BARNSLEY?!
Hi
My name is Paul Stott and I live in Barnsley. I too am descended from the James Stott who was born in 1822. I found this post on a Google search. I had looked into my family history a number of years ago but got stuck with James. My grandfather's brother and sister died in the Barnsley civic hall disaster. My grandad (James) went with them on that fateful day but was standing with a friend at the time of the crush and survived to tell the tale. I helped arrange the century event for the disaster and the memorial that was erected in their memory.
I was excited to see that James' mother and father had been identified and wondered if anyone had found out any more information about William and Margaret or their ancestors. If not any advice about researching them would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Paul

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm afraid the original poster didn't become a member of the Society nor the forum. I hope some of the research above has helped your own tree.
