I am looking for info for Joseph William Smith born in Staffordshire 1868.

in the 1901 census he was married to a Leah and had children; Mary-anne (Polly) Fred Leah and May other children followed. They lived in 14 Appleton village. :D

For the benefit of anybody wishing to assist, these are the details from the 1901 census as ages and birthplaces are very important

14 Appleton Village, Widnes, Lancashire
Joseph Smith Head M 33 Widnes Corporation Carter Eccleshall Staffordshire
Leah Wife M 32 Prees, Shropshire
Mary A daur 6 Widnes
Fred son 5 "
Leah daur 4 "
May daur 2 "
RG13; Piece: 3513; Folio: 32; Page: 8.

In case you don't have the marriage for Joseph and Leah, although there are four entries between 1891 and 1899, the one I would suspect is yours would be Joseph Smith to Leah Chidlow Q4 1892 Wem 6a 1437, Wem being in Shropshire.

Unfortunately there are two births for Leah Smith in the Prescot district, who I thought would be the least common name.

Q3 1893 Prescot 8b 778 and
Q1 1897 Prescot 8b 713

If you apply for the birth certificate you should stipulate that the parents should be Joseph and Leah and this should give you Leah's maiden surname.

Thankyou.

About 1910/1912 there is an additional son, Frank, aged 17 born Prees Shrops.

Strange he is not on the 1901 as he would only have been 7

P

It also lists a William Smith, aged 5 months as a son, strange given that the wife appears to have died in 1906.

This is my family and I am reserching them at the moment, I would love to know if anyone has any more information on them. Leah and Joseph were my great grand parents on my mums side, I am willing to give anyone any infor they want that I know about.

I think (my presumtion only) that William and John were twins, if they were born in june of that year, John died at 2 months old on the 28 August 1906.

I am trying to research what happened to the other children and looking into the parents of Leah and Joseph too. I will know shortly about leah as I have ordered a birth cert. for Leah Chidlow of which I am certain was her maiden name.

Hello All

I ordered a birth Certificate for Leah Chidlow born (15 September) 1868 and on it - it says her father was Joseph Chidlow (by the way his occupation say farm labourer - I think) and mother Ann Chidlow (formerly Jeffreys). I cannot find a marriage for them.

I was convinced her name was Ann Palin.

Could it have been that Ann Married a Palin before she married Joseph
or
There is a death for Ann Chidlow in 1965 - could this have been his 1st marriage to Ann Palin and he went on to marry Ann Jeffreys.

How is it I can't find a marriage for them?

I have now ordered a birth certificate for Mary Ann Smith - Leah's eldest daughter and my Grandmother just to check for certain I have the right family tree, but I am sure I have the right tree. I will know next week.

Also where is kathy k who started this post, I would love to know if you are related - it is this post that gave me load of info

Thanks Andrea

Market Drayton March Q 1863 vol 6a page 1075
On the same page Joseph Chidlow and Ann Palin

Market Drayton DEc Q 1865
Joseph Chidlow
3 men and 2 women on the page could the missing name be Ann jeffreys?

Could Joseph have married Ann Palin she dies and he marries Ann Jeffreys?

Hi Hilary :)
There's a death in Wem Shrops in March qtr 1865 for
an Ann Chidlow.
It's quite an unusual surname, makes you wonder?

The marriage for 1865 has an incorrect page number. It should be 1521 and the two ladies on the same page are Martha Gregory and Mary Matthews, so I don't think this would be your Joseph.

I have got the birth certificate for Mary Ann Smith born 6 oct 1894, it comfirms leah chidlow and joseph smith are her parents,

Leah chidlow's born 15 September 1868 comfirms joseph smith and Ann Chidlow formaly Jeffreys.

Ann would have been 36 when she had Leah

Also on the 1871 census and 1881 census it says that Thomas a grandchild is living with them.

Did Joseph have other children who were old enough to have a child when they were starting the new family.

I still cannot find the marriage of Joseph to Ann Jeffreys

I think I have found Joseph and Ann Jeffreys marriage (I got the answers from the Staffordshire family history site - so not all my credit)

Ann Jeffreys married Joseph in 1854 although the surname is spelt Chidler, on the 1861 census is Martha and Ann,

Martha we think is the mother of Thomas, she was an unmarried mother and would have only been 15 at the time she give birth,

It seems to me that Joseph and Ann brought up Thomas and Martha went on to work as a servant in cesus 1871 and 1881.

Martha and Thomas are reunited in a later census on one of them it says she is is mother and on the later one it says she is his sister ( i believe she is his mum)

I have not long got this reply so I am going to check it out and update my tree, I think the info I have been given is right, yippee
