John,

Don’t think I can help much but I am a Dimeck and recognise the family described as my own. Problem is that whilst Carmen & the McGregors appear on the family tree passed to me, this branch had remained a complete mystery until now. Let me tell you the little I know.

By way of introduction, I am the Grandson of Samuel George Dimeck & Alice Martin. Samuel George Dimeck (also known as ‘Big Mick’ !) was the first child of Salvatore Fillipo Maria Giuseppe Antonio Maria Damaso Amabile Maria Dimech (also known as Amabile and later as George). You can understand the need for nicknames but it doesn’t make family history research any easier ! George was born in 1865 in Malta, ran away to sea at the age of 17 and eventually settled in Liverpool. The ‘h’ in Dimech was mistakenly changed to ‘k’ at some point in his British naturalisation.

Maria Carmelia Dimeck, Carmen, was the fifth child of eleven and born 1901 to ‘Maltese George’ and his wife Mary Ann nee Wallace. I have Carmen married to John McGregor in 1923. Children on the family tree are; Angela, Marie, Donald, John, Gerard, Barry, Jean, Jennifer, Jacqueline and Pauline.

Here’s where the mystery lies for me. My tree also notes that they all moved to New Zealand. Nothing known since.

At one time Carmen must have been a big pal of my Nan, Alice Martin. She, and John McGregor are witnesses on Nan’s wedding certificate. (2nd Feb 1923. St Patrick’s Chapel, Park Place) Carmen also wed in 1923. Nan named her second child Carmen too. I recognise the 15 Mornington Street address you mentioned and am told that after Sam Geo and Alice were married that Carmen lived there with them. I have receipts from the funeral of little Carmen which were returned to Alice at that same address in 1929.

At some point, there was definitely a big ‘stouchi’. Alice never did talk much about Carmen much after that. My dad was too young at the time and doesn’t know what it was about. Sorry I can't be more help than this but I’ll see if I can find out anything more.

John, welcome to your Dimeck ancestry ! I’m pleased to add you to my family tree. Thanks for filling some gaps and shedding a little light on a mystery. You’ve also given me more to work on with the Martin branch that had stalled for me at Hester. Once I have my laptop repaired and running again, I’ll email you a couple of things that may be of interest.

Thanks too, to Tina, Gray, Mary A and EdO for their helpful interest.

Hello Gerry and welcome to the forum.

I just love it when families manage to link up and this has been quite a fascinating story, thanks for adding to it.

Katie has sent an email to John with details from the newspaper, I hope he will post it on here so that everybody can see the conclusion.

Hi Gerry, John, Tina, Ed O.. & Mary Ann,

John will be thrilled with this I am sure.

After today, I feel I am talking ' gobbledegook '

This list is getting longer taking interest in this family, Our family.

I have spent the most 'surreal' afternoon of my life..

After spending 1 and 1/2 hours on the phone from Texas from a previous enquiry re Thomas Henry Fairhurst/Ashcroft.my brain is scrambled
It was lovely!!

Then I thought I would just check up on John and Carmen

I saw Gerry's post: I was amazed, also delighted with his reply!

Alice Martin was the daughter of Christopher Martin & Alice Hagan.(Father, I believe was Terence Hagan) not yet proven!

Christopher Martin was the son of James Martin, c 1845 Much Woolton `nr l.pool brother to Letitia Martin.
I am not sure of his mother's name as I could only find him with his paternal g.parents on the census.. James Martin c 1810 Ireland and Hester?Esther White (this was Hester's 2nd marr to a unknown White) They had a daughter Susannah White whom I have not been able to trace.
Letitia(aka Teresa was my x3 g.mother..

This is all from memory as I have lost my PC

Now I need a cup of tea..  or something stronger.

Hi Gerry lovely to "meet" you.
I enjoyed reading all your family info and confirming some of our findings. I'm glad Maltese George didn't use all his first names
I'll be keeping a watch on the posts here.
Fantastic!! :D

Warmies
