Hi Crew :)
Please can you have a look at this in 1841?
Francis 35 bn Foreign Parts "master" mariner in Lpool.
I think it's info after his first name & not his surname.
HO107/pce 562/bk 6
transcribed as Francis Bay Aug

Thanks

Tina

Wow Tina that sounds incredibly positive. I guess then if we can identify him as a Master Mariner that means his name will be on some kind of list somewhere. I am interested by the use of the terms Foreign Parts, is it really as general as that, or is it taken to refer to a particular place. Sounds like the kind of thing someone would write after having seen someone rather than talked to them.
I really feel like, with all your help, I have got soemwhere in the last 24 hours after being incredibly disheartened for some time.

I've had a look at the census and I think It reads Francis Boys Ant with what looks like a small n at the top of the t as a contaction and then a capital S. Being fanciful could this with an American drawl be Boystan if you see what I mean BUT I've no idea what the S would then mean.

F meaning foreign parts means simply that. For the 1841 census people were asked to record whether they were born in the county if the answer was no but they were born England or Wales an N for no was written in the box. Y was written for Yes. If they were born Scotland an S was written, I for Ireland and and F or FP (foriegn parts) for anywhere else.

Whoever this man is he is in a Lodging House on Drury Lane. Unfortuantely each country will have their own list of Master Mariners so unless he was registered in the UK it could be difficult to find out more.

I looked elsewhere and his name is given as Francis BOYD but it doesn't look like that to me.

PS On another I have found the name as FRancis BOYS the address is India Brick Drury Lane Liverpool

Thanks again. Just for the moment I am going to think it is my man.
I am going to try and find the marriage certificate between he and Emma Thompson to see if there is any further information on that.

The certificate will give his father's name to see if it is the same man.

You could ask for a look up as the church is known.
