As James is not a direct descendant think I'll settle for this explanation and go for Michael's death cert for now. As I can find Michael and Mary in 1841 and Mary in 1861+, it was really just frustration as to why they weren't there in 1851. Was also hoping for a clue as to where in Ireland Michael may have been born.

Hi Chris have you followed Michaels sister Mary.. or his brother Thomas on the census.. maybe one will reveal a place in Ireland..Plus with the dad Thomas being aged 60 in 1841 and the youngest child being aged 10.. i would assume there are a few more older siblings before Michael...

Can't find anything positive on Mary or Thomas other than the 1861 suggestion earlier that Thomas could be a soldier in Surrey. The Ancestry transcription gives a place name that I couldn't find (googled it).
Can't seem to get on Ancestry at the moment to check it out again.

Thanks Kirsty, had found that one eventually on OPC. :)
Colette - Thanks so much. I had seen that as one of quite a few marriages for Mary Barker, but didn't have the chance to follow any of them through yesterday. Also, was put off by the Mary Ann. :o
Looks like it could be a good match though. Still doesn't help me pinpoint a location in Ireland unfortunately.

Holland

Post by Kirsty »

Just picking up on the Holland element of this thread...

Here is a section of a 1903 OS map featuring Upholland.
You can see the centre of Upholland to the middle right of the image.
In the bottom left is Holland Moss.
And slightly to the left of the middle is Holland Moor. Just a few Holland's for you...

Thanks Kirsty.
Not sure how I can progress the "Holland" route.
I've tried the OPC marriages, but without a maiden name for Catherine I think I might be up a creek without a paddle.

Thomas Houlton marries Elizabeth Swift 1881 Prescot

Post by ClaireMH »

Hi Chris,

I'm new to the forum and found this topic through doing a search for Thomas Houlton.
I realise there have been no posts for a couple of months, but I wanted to clear something up for you, so you're not following a wrong trail.

The Thomas Houlton who married Elizabeth Swift in 1881 with the 7 children that Collete listed, is not your Thomas Houlton.
This is my G grandfather born in Billinge to John & Anne Houlton.

Sorry its not a more positive post.

Hi Claire and a big welcome to the forum. Thanks for your post. I had not followed this line up at the moment as it was getting further away from my direct line and I had other fish to fry, so to speak
Like all these things I would probably have come back to it before too long, so thanks for stopping me going on a wild goose chase.
Hope we can help you with some of your missing rellies at some point.
Chris
:D
PS For those who took an interest I got Michael's death cert, but it didn't help. I'm sure it's him (aged 33 living Parr Stocks) but the informant is Thomas Hodon (Hoolon?) who was in attendance. No idea who he is!

Hi Chris
What was the address on death certificate please?

The informant may have been Registrar at a hospital or a Doctor who called at the house/
Thank you

Hi Tina,
Thanks for your continued interest  and a belated Happy New Year. Hope you aren't melting down there :P
To qoute from Michael's death cert:
where died; Parr Stocks Parr
cause of death - can't read it something like Phlltiasis 2 years certified
sig, desc, res of informant : Thomas Hoolon (?), In attendance Parr Stocks Parr
Death was reg on the same day (1st Mar 1853)
Registrar also unreadable but ends .....shill
Could be Thomas was a doctor but it doesn't say so.
Any thoughts?
Chris

Death Certificate

Post by Kirsty »

Hi Chris and All,

Hope everyone is well and not too hot or cold depending what side of the earth you're on

The death certificate sounds interesting. Chris = would you be able to post an image of the bits you can't read so we can have a go at deciphering it?

Best Wishes, Kirsty :)

P.S. Could the cause of death read, PHTHISIS? If so I have this on some of my death certificates also. It's an old medical/scientific word which I don't think is used anymore. I believe it basically refers to lung disease, specifically, tuberculosis (consumption). On death certificates you often get the word PULMONALIS with PHTHISIS. PULMONALIS means pulmonary. Pulmonary: Having to do with the lungs.

Thank you Chris for New Year wishes.
Felice Anno Nuovo to youself and familia.

Good idea Kirsty if we could have a squizz at death cert.
It was a dreadful wasting illness.
(See Opera Mimi)

I did try to find Thomas Hoolan/Hodan? in 1851 in Parr with no luck.

Thanks Kirsty about weather, thunderstorm at 3am cooled the air & brought us much welcome 34mm rain.

Sounds so much like Houlton, even if you have discounted this person as being in your direct line could they be related somehow and so been friendly enough to be nearby when needed.

Hi All,
Thanks for your input. I will post the cert but I will need to scan it first and I've never posted anything before so it may take a while :?
Have to go out to a meeting soon, so won't have a chance for a while.

BUT
Mary you must have xray vision
I've just checked 1851 census for Thomas Houlton. Found one in Ashton. Then checked for marriages and guess what (drum roll)
He marries Mary Ann Barker Jun 1847
Thomas' wife Mary Ann in 1851 is born Ireland.
Gives me somewhere to go again :D
Will be back later
Thanks All

I would say PHTHISIS is right but not sure about the surname for Thomas.
