Question: Are the Sheltering Homes records in the Liverpool Record Office or are they held at Liverpool University as part of the Barnardo's archive? See http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/mari ... sheetId=12
Could you please email the Record Office and ask this question? If you can get a response on Monday - and I'm thinking they may be in the archives if they have them - I can have a look on Tuesday but may need to place a booking Monday to see them.
Hi MaryA,
Just got this response from the LRO...
Thank you for your e mail. On checking our online catalogue – I found out the following information:-
Sheltering Homes for Orphan, Fatherless & Destitute Children: Opened 1872 in Byrom Street. Moved to Myrtle Street 1889. Amalgamated with Dr Barnardo's Homes 1925. Sold to Education Committee for Junior Instruction Centre 1935.
We do hold some records here – in the Louisa Birt Collection – which is catalogued under 920 BIR – so they may be of some use to you . I would imagine that, as you say, the main collection would probably be at Liverpool University now – so you would be best to check with them .
Regards
Karen

Thanks Bertie,
More grist to the mill.... Soon I might be able to finally know what happened to all the unfortunate children born to Thomas and Elizabeth Fry. Of course I will never know if the parents were simply unfortunates who fell on very hard times, or were in fact neglectful of their duties as parents, hard times or not.
