A question for Dickiesam: Where did you find the information on Andrew N Jones and the other members of George Fosbery Jones's family? I have used Ancestry and Familysearch but can't find them even when I know the DOB's. Any tips or hints?
Thanks again, Barry
ps: I have ordered the birth certificates fort Andrew and Richard

Most of the information, if not all, on births came from http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
For births after September qtr of 1911 you can use the mother's maiden name in conjunction with her married name to search for births. When searching for possible births to a couple leave the forename blank and just use a span of years, such as Sep qtr 1911 to Dec qtr 1925. The latter depends on how old the mother would be because births over the age of 45 were quite rare back then.

I rarely use Familysearch for 'recent' events and I don't subscribe to Ancestry.
So I have just repeated the search using FreeBMD....
Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page

Barry Jones,
I came across this thread whilst looking for information on Mersey Lightships - on which I am trying to find information relating to a Great Uncle who I believe served in 1890-1911 timeframe.
I noted you state 'The Mersey Docks and Harbour Board sent me his complete employment record'.
Could you please advise how you obtained this - for I have previously been directed towards the Mersey Maritime Museum as a likely source of old MDHB material.

As I live on the South coast getting to the Museum is not just 'popping up the road', and it may be some time before I can make the trip. If options exist to obtain employment record information from a distance I would very much like to take advantage of that option.

Any assistance much appreciated.

Regards

John

This is in response to John 'lancsman'.
My query to the Merseyside Docks and Harbour Board was many years ago so their procedures may have changed. I wrote directly to the Company. Unfortunately, I no longer have the original correspondence. They sent me a photocopy of the 'Marine Surveyor's Department' record covering the years that my great grandfather served with them (1860-1896). His record had ten entries ranging from his initial appointment as a lightship seaman to his final superannuation. The employment record of Thomas Robertson (served 1865 to 1891 *),Thomas Williams (served 1868 to 1892*), David Chambers (served 1863 to 1879 *) and Mrs Mary Elizabeth Williams (served 1894 to *) are also included in the record. They were all lighthouse keepers. These lighthouses include the North Wall, Leasowe, Dove Marks, Hoylake and Crosby. Some were also superintendents of lifeboats. (The * means that they were still employed after 1894)
The Company also sent me a detailed list of Superannuated Officers from 1838 to 1897. The details include employment capacity ( lighthouse keeper, mechanic, engineer, dock gateman, lightship seaman), salary, pension, years of service, etc. There are 14 names on this list.
Like yourself, I do not have the ability to "pop up the road'. my journey from Nashville, Tennessee would be somewhat more difficult than yours. I did go to the Mersey Maritime Museum once seeking photographs and records. They were very helpful.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Barry,
Many thanks for your reponse - much appreciated.
Apologies for delay in getting back to you - I have been away for a few days.

Yes I guess things have moved on since your enquiry - as I was directed to the Maritime Museum when I approached the company. It seems they have deposited quite a large collection of the MD&HB archives with the museum.

As the Museum does not currently operate a research service for these records my investigation will have to wait a while - until I find a convenient time to add a couple of days onto a trip to the area, and spend it pursuing a potential linkage to a great Uncle.

Thanks again - Good Luck with your ongoing research

Regards

John
