Hi MaryA,
I had seen that image and copied it TVM. I am certain the priest made a mistake or, in view of my recent thoughts on Thomas Fry, Thomas didn't know his name at the time.

Got a bit of unravelling to do with that family!

I'll check the entry for the admissions for 1896 in Liverpool Workhouse, to see who they were admitted with. From what I can make of it DS They were Catholic for the mother and CofE for the Father not unusual. Quite interesting I'll have a further delve for you.

Joseph Fry

Post by dickiesam »

Hi all,
An update! Subject to confirmation it would seem that young Joseph survived Kirkdale and Cottage homes..

Thanks to great help I have been given this marriage..
Marriage Jun 1918 - W. Derby - 8b - 656: Fry, Joseph and Lowe, Martha Elizabeth.
YoBs: Fry = 1894 and Lowe = 1897.
Fathers: Thomas Fry and Charles John Lowe.
Marriage place: St Mary's, Wavertree.

There is only 1 Joseph Fry in the 1901 with a YoB of 1894 +/- 3 years, and there's only 1 where the father is Thomas Fry. So it's very good odds this is my Joseph.

I have tracked Martha Lowe back to London 1901 [RG13 - 321 - 21 - 34] and found her death in Southend in 1976. There appears to be just one birth from this union: Births Mar 1921: Fry, Joan F - Lowe - Mile End - 1c - 641.

So Joseph survived the war and I am hoping his service papers survived the fire in WW2. Might give a clue as to where he was in 1911. I have come across a similar case before so I have a suspicion that if he was sent to Canada, he enlisted and came back with a Canadian outfit. He would have been 20 years old in 1914. Will a 1918 Liverpool marriage cert be on Ancestry?

If he was in Canada he would probably enlisted in Canada but I cannot see him in the Canadian Attestation index on their Archives site. I might be missing it though.

Re: LRO visit help UPDATE!

Post by dickiesam »

UPDATE!
It has been a while coming but I may have found the missing Joseph Fry bn Liverpool 1894 and apparently abandoned by his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Fry. His father was my paternal gran's brother.

Note in records of Liverpool Workhouse:
28 July 1898: Joseph Fry aged 5 years, found in Mill Lane. Discharged 14 Oct 1898 to Kirkdale Industrial Schools.

Note in Kirkdale Industrial School records:
Discharged 10 Nov 1903 to Olive Mount Cottage Homes.
[but could be Fazackerly Cottage Homes, tba]

He wasn't in the 1911, wasn't listed as an outgoing passenger and was too young to be soldiering. It then struck me this evening that like my foster brother who had been in an orphanage, he may have joined the MN. Checked Findmypast and got a hit with a photo! But is it him? There are only a couple of quite old photos of his sister [my gran] to compare.

There are 3 records in Findmypast, all definitely the same man, but with 3 different dates of birth, but within the same year of 1894. Because Joseph had been abandoned he probably wouldn't have a clue as to the precise date. He was eventually discharged from the MN in London in/abt 1940. The last digit isn't very clear. And there's a death in London that fits...
FRY, Joseph
Registration district: Poplar, London
Year/qtr of registration: 1967 / Apr-May-Jun
Age at death: 72; Volume no: 5D; Page no: 569.

The story continues....
