I don't think they will have written the wrong family on his papers, the reason for the names being crossed through is because his next of kin will have been superceded by his wife's name.LindaG wrote:On one of the pages it has as next of kin Charles Phoebe and James with a line through it and underneath that he is married (Mary Tomlinson ) I know this is definitely the right marriage. On the marriage certificate his fathers name is Edward. ............The other possibility is they have written the wrong family on his papers. The address on the army records and marriage cert are the same.
Linda
However the name Charles on the documents is a bit baffling.

I think it is a simple, or perhaps intended 'mistake'. His 'father' Edward more or less implied that Charles was dead from the way he completed the household census form in 19**. Charles would be unlikely to claim Edward as a next of kin in that scenario. However the name Charles on the documents is a bit baffling.

hi Folks,
thanks for your input. Just looked at the army papers again he was discharged March 1920, so know he is alive and well then. I have been told by a family member that Charles Woods was alive when his wife and two children died in the blitz that was May 1941, where he dissapeared to, don't know, can only guess he stayed in Liverpool, he certainly had no contact with his son George Woods who was raised by his Grandparents.
Thanks Linda

Yes it is hard to say, I have to assume for the time being he stayed in Liverpool. He was working as a builders Slater at the time of the family’s death. It is on the death certificates, a cousin has just informed me.
Thanks Linda

You may know this already but the family's deaths are all recorded on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.
Maybe Charles just couldn't cope with what had happened. Were he and his son injured?
There is also an Edith Woods wife of James Woods who died the day after the other Woods' death at a different location. I hope this wasn't Charles' sister in law.
According the book "Merseyside's secret blitz diary" by Arthur Johnson,1232 were killed, 1341 seriously injured and 565 slightly injured during the May blitz on Liverpool 2 - 8 May 1941.
A mass funeral was held on 14 May at Anfield cemetery were around 1000 people were buried in a common grave
It must have been terrible for both father and son.

Yes I have seen the CWG website. His son George survived because he was at his Grandmothers house, I have no idea about his father Charles, and because George was raised by his grandparents he knew next to nothing of his father, but always wanted to know, sadly he is no longer with us. That’s interesting about the Edith & James Woods; I have no idea, but will look into it.
