The Dagg story

Post by dickiesam »

Tina wrote:I was going to phone around any Dagg's in the metro area phone book!!
Fingers crossed.
I've looked in W.A.G.S site (no it's not a doggie rescue site  ) under surname interests, no Dagg.
I will send an email tomorrow to them.

Tina
Hi Tina,
I keep telling my mate Ed that there may be more in the Dagg story and not to draw a line under it yet. It would be truly wonderful if you did turn up a living descendant in time for his big clan do.
Can't thank you and the other crew members enough for so much info in so short a time.

The Dagg family saga!

Post by dickiesam »

OK folks I am awake! And what do I wake up to.... ? There are living Dagg descendants out there! This is incredible news.

And Tina you beauty, you found them on the first call. It really is incredible. Now we are among the alive and kicking it is near the time when my gob-smacked friend Ed has to get in touch should the Dag family want to 'connect'. I will PM Tina with his email.

This is a quite extraordinary sequence of events.... from a casual mention over a pub lunch about a week ago that Ed had a missing piece in his family jigsaw from when Sarah Jane Taylor had married in 1905 and was 'rumoured' to have gone to Australia. He knew who Sarah's parents were. Her father was a direct link to Ed. He knew Charles' and Sarah's YoBs and that Charles had come back from WA to marry.... Now we have living descendants thanks to the interest and tenacity of the crew.

A huge thank you to all who contributed to this outcome.

I'm here, I'm here!
If there is a willingness for the Dagg folk to connect probably best if they do it direct with Ed, my overwhelmed friend, who never expected anything like the result we have.

For the sake of the crew perhaps you would post the outline/essentials of your phone calls here. So we know the extent of our/your success.
As I said before, can't thank you enough...

I can't afford to tear my hair out... and I am not allowed to chew my nails... And my BP remains steady at 120 over 70, so it's another glass of red while we wait!

D.S & Mary
Okies, I rang Hazel back, she had spoken to Hillary nee Dagg, so named after her Mum's maiden name.
I then rang Hillary, later Roslyn nee Dagg rang me...
The 3rd sister is in Melb.(Valma I think)
Between the two I learned that Chas & Sarah Jane came to Coolgardie via Qld where he had been a carter for the cane cutters. They were very self contained people and didn't care much for their two kiddies. Margaret Lilian known as Lily was frightened by a neighbours lodger when young, had what we would could a nervous breakdown. Parents put her in Claremont hospital, mental ward & she was never released. A neighbour of Robert's was a nurse there and looked out for Lily.
When the oldies died, they found a glory box full of beautiful cloths, towels, napkins all embroidered with the letter L...Poor lass.
Robert when older visited Lily all through her life.
Lily buried by Church of Christ (see prev post), they did that for the inmates, better than a paupers grave.
The girls hardly ever saw their grandees, made to sit in the kitchen if Robt took them with him. A very old couple by all accounts.
Robt & Dorothy had it tough during the Depression years.
Hazel's late husband told her, a man called one day, spitting image of his Dad & said he was Charles Dagg, illigt son of Chas. Robert gave him short shrift and was never seen again.
Robt, on a very rare occasion when he talked about family, hinted that Chas was not the only one, there was another love child somewhere  !!
Sarah & Chas both cremated, a memorial tree planted at Claremont Jetty & their ashes scattered there.
The girls have talked about getting Lily exhumed & cremated, her ashes put in the same place.
Patricia wife of the late Neville went to Ireland & didn't get very far with her search but has marr. cert. They know nothing much about the Taylors. Chas father was Thomas, something big in the local church of Ireland, gentleman farmer.
They don't know why they left Ireland, family feud, religion?
The suburb in Coolgardie is a ghost town, only chimney places, broken bricks etc left of the old houses.
Roslyn is copying some photos for me & posting them tomorrow.
They are all lovely people, so friendly and open.
I don't have email address for Roslyn yet.
A very interesting afternoon for me indeed.
I'll pm my email addie for you to give to Ed, thanks D.S
and tell him I'm still staggered about this contact :)

One of the witnesses to the marriage of S.J to Chas was a
James Hewson Dagg.
I've found a little fella Hewson Dagg in 1901 census born in Wicklow living in Yorks with his parents Edward & Sarah with 4 other sibs.
You have to wonder if it's a family name, perhaps maiden??
It was transcribed as Euston but a member in Anc@ has sent in an error.
I won't contact them just yet.

Hi Tina,
Thank you so much for the Dagg family info. I am sure Ed will be thrilled to get such up-to-date 'history'. As for your England 1901 census find there is a family name associated with the Dagg family... usually it is shown as Heuston or Hueston. Crops up regularly. I've passed that tidbit on to Ed.
Cheers,

Hi Tina,
Those comments were well deserved... actions above and beyond etc..!

My friend Ed, whose interest in family history took off after hearing my tales of great finds, breakthroughs, brick walls knocked down etc, has asked me to tell everyone who contributed that he is hugely pleased that he has been able to find what happened to his g.g.aunt Sarah Jane. He is also very impressed with the attention and perseverance his 'query' received from the crew.
