Inquest report?
Inquest report?
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find an inquest report in Liverpool for 1920? I'm looking for William Beardow aged 25 who apparently cut his throat as a result of shell shock sustained in the first World War.
Thanks in advance

Re: Inquest report?
Tried to check the Archive Catalogue to see what dates they might hold Inquests for but it's unavailable at present, very likely due to the move of documents back to the library which will be taking place from about now for the next few months.
I'm afraid the records will be at the Record Office, if available, however I believe your first search would be better in the newspapers.

Thanks Mary and Blue.
The inquest record is for a friend and as she lives in Liverpool she will be able to visit the records office. I'll have a try with the newspapers.

The Old Newspapers site only goes up to 1900 ish, although you might have more luck with a subscription site.

Re: Inquest report?
If your friend has the date of death she'd probably be best to go and have a look at the newspaper perhaps the Echo on film at the the World Museum Floor 2.

Hi Barbara,
Has your friend got William's service record? It's on Ancestry. He was in the Cheshire Regiment. It mentions shell-shock but I can't see any reference to how he died. There are records included about his wife's widow award.

Re: Inquest report?
Question for the Education Officer please:
Can you tell me where is the 'World Museum Floor 2'?
Is it a department within the museum?
Thanks

Re: Inquest report?
All the films from Liverpool Record Office are temporarily located on Floor 2 of the World Museum on William B rown Street next to the Central Library which is closed for renovation at the moment.

Re: Inquest report?
As I see William died in Birkenhead it would probably be better to try the Birkenhead papers as the inquest would have taken place there. They are held on film at Birkenhead library I believe.
Wirral Archives might know about Inquest reports but I'd try the papers first.

Re: Inquest report?
Just caught up with all the great responses to my question. I'll get in touch with my friend and ask her what info she's got and pass on all the useful tips. Will let you know the outcome.
Many thanks from both of us!

Re: Inquest report?
Hi Barbara
I have just been on to Wirral Archives (0151-606-2929)
Most helpful!
They have the Inquest Registers including 1920. You need to provide them with name and date of death or at least the relevant quarter in 1920.
Then under a half hour free search they will look up the inquest and provide the result. They can email this to you. If there is an image there is a charge of £5 to send by post or 50p if you collect. (The registers are not open to the public). Due to how busy they are there can be a 10 day wait.
However, they also have the actual newspapers there which are available to the public. If you wish to view just ring the day before so that they can have them ready.
Wirral Archives are open Mon-Fri 9.30 - 4.30 and don't close for lunch.
Sounds a researcher friendly place!
Good Luck
