Looking for 2 burials

William Marshall and his wife Sophia both died in Liverpool in the 19th century but I can't find any trace of their burials - not on Lancs online parish clerk site, nor on Ancestry's Liverpool records, nor on the burial index on FMP.

It is possible that they weren't buried in Liverpool, and I've no idea if they were buried together. I believe William to have been originally from Shap, Westmoreland, but he and Sophia were married and lived for several years in Sophia's home parish of Over/Darnhall, Cheshire. I haven't been able to find any suggestions of burials in those places either; so although I've no proof that they were buried in the Liverpool area, I think it's likely.

Here are the death details, gleaned from William's will and Sophia's death cert:

William Marshall d 30 May 1834 at Lansdowne Place, Everton, believed around 78-80 years old
Sophia Marshall d 20 Nov 1854 at 60, Rodney St, Liverpool, age 84


The family was reasonably wealthy and I'd have expected a newspaper obituary for one or both but don't have BL access.

Can anyone help me find their burial place or places?

Welcome to the forum.
The Liverpool Mercury carried announcements of these deaths. The first: at Lansdown Place, Everton aged 80 years, Mr William Marshall, late of Winsford, Cheshire.
The second: at 60 Rodney Street, the residence of her son in law John Taylor Esq, Sophia, widow of the late William Marshall, of Winsford Hill, Cheshire.

I think there were few reports of funerals published in those days. At that time burials would be in churchyards, as the municipal cemeteries had not been instituted. The websites you have seen are far from being a complete record of burials, and you face a long search of microfilmed burial registers as there were many parish churches in Liverpool then.

Have you any more information about the Marshalls which might help our keen sleuths?

I'm no sure what other evidence would be helpful tbh.

AFAIK, the family was protestant. The Marshalls were still in Winsford in 1820; I don't know when they moved to the Liverpool area. William was a salt proprietor in Winsford.

William's oldest daughter was Elizabeth, the wife of John Taylor (the son in law mentioned) who was in his day a well known cotton broker and polymath; I imagine that their being in Liverpool was probably the prompt for William and Sophia to move there. I have a copy of John Taylor's obituary. He died in 1857 (I think! would you believe the date is cut off the obit!), at Everton Cres, and was buried in St James's cemetery.

William and Sophia's other daughter was Sophia; she married a surgeon, John Cooper, and was living in Liscard in 1871. Her death was registered in 1873 in Birkenhead district.

There was also a son, William, who moved to Leicester.

Have you tried Winsford Church? Other than that I can only suggest you check the burial registers of churches near where they lived in Liverpool. Many of these are not on line so you would have to search the registers at Liverpool Record office.
