Re: Titanic William James Revell born 1880 in Liverpool
REVELL, William James Francis - Head - Married - 30 - 1881 - Ship's Steward - Liverpool.
REVELL, Blanche Louise - Wife - 27 - 1884 - Southampton.
CHAPMAN, Sylvia - Visitor - u/m - 37 - 1874 - London.
Address: 102 Malmesbury Road, Southampton, Hampshire.
William J F Revell married Blanche L Abbott
Registration district: Southampton, Hampshire
Year /qtr of registration: 1911 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume no: 2C; Page no: 57.
No births were registered to this marriage. Oddly I haven't found out what happened to Blanche after William died. She may have been, in company with many others, in a legal predicament. Unless she could get a Death Certificate she would still be legally married. If William's body was not recovered she would not be able to get a death certificate and would need a Court's declaration [known as a Benjamin Order], after 7 years, that he was dead. She didn't marry as Revel and I haven't found a death for her yet either.
and this from a BBC News report:
102 Malmesbury Road
William James Revell was born 1880 in Liverpool, Lancashire.
By the time he signed onto Titanic in 1912 as a watchman in the first class saloon he was living at 102 Malmesbury Road, Southampton, with his new wife, Blanche Louisa and their baby son.
Little Jack Louis Francis had been born in their house on 21 July 1911 and was nine months old when he lost his father.
Mr Revell's duties on board were to ensure that the saloon was secure when not in use, and to patrol the first class areas of the ship as a watchman. He was also paid £3.15s.0d per month.
Mr Revell had transferred to the Titanic from the Olympic where he had already survived a collision between the ship and naval cruiser, HMS Hawke, in the Solent in September 1911.
But he did not survive the sinking of Titanic and his body was never found.
His wife's brother Ernest Owen Abbott, also a steward, died in the disaster too.
So she lost her husband and her brother

Re: Titanic William James Revell born 1880 in Liverpool
The White Star Line, who paid the going rate for the job, mainly employed freelance workers who could be let go when the job finished.
Rather bureaucratically, the number crunchers at White Star calculated surviving staff's wages up until the exact point they entered the water and according to the records, “stopped performing their allocated job”. The company received some flak over this heartless calculation and there was a public outcry.
And the story is even more sad:
Jack Lewis Revell was taken prisoner in the Dutch East Indies and died in captivity 1 August 1942 aged 31.

Re: Titanic William James Revell born 1880 in Liverpool
Thanks Mary ! Such a sad story for poor Blanche! I hoped that she did remarry! Losing your husband, brother and your son is unthinkable
I would love to also know about their earlier life! Even if they have no connection to my Revells! My grandmother Eleanor Clara Halsall married a James Revell in Liverpool.
Best wishes
Victoria

Re: Titanic William James Revell born 1880 in Liverpool
Although Dickiesam has quoted correctly from the census entry the years of birth for A Revell and Bessy F don't match their ages, this is because the enumerator's marks which are often / appear to have been counted twice in their case making the mark an X and making the ages look as though they were 18 and 15 with the one crossed through. They are actually as DS gives, 8 and 5 in 1891.dickiesam wrote: 1891:

Re: Titanic William James Revell born 1880 in Liverpool
My apologies re the ages of those two children! I originally thought Alice was a second wife then looked more closely at the census summary page. I then dawned on me it was a transcription error. Correction has been submitted. It was quite late and I forgot to adjust their year of birth and include a note to that effect in my post.MaryA wrote:Although Dickiesam has quoted correctly from the census entry the years of birth for A Revell and Bessy F don't match their ages, this is because the enumerator's marks which are often / appear to have been counted twice in their case making the mark an X and making the ages look as though they were 18 and 15 with the one crossed through. Re: Titanic William James Revell born 1880 in Liverpool
Curious as to what happened to Blanche after she remarried I found this for her second husband:
Death: PIPER, Albert B
Registration district: Southampton, Hampshire
Year/qtr of registration: 1934 / Jul-Aug-Sep
Age at death: 54
Volume no: 2C; Page no: 77.
Blanche survived Albert by 35 years during which time she lost her only child, son Jack by her first marriage, when he died in a Japanese POW camp in Indonesia in 1942. I hope she had some happiness in her life.

Not your fault DS, I hope I replied clearly stating that you did transcribe what was there, even on the image.
V, yes that could certainly be correct, it is the "maiden name" that is given or rather asked for on the certificate, however, many often additionally give a "formerly" and include a previous married name.

Re: Titanic William James Revell born 1880 in Liverpool
Found this site quite by accident!
My name is John Revell; I am the grandson of William James Revell who perished, with my great-uncle, Ernest Abbott, on the Titanic.
For a long time I have been trying to trace descendants of Williams' sister,Alexandrina and his brother,John Louis Revell.
Alexandrina died as a result of her clothes catching fire in Mar. 1919-accelerated by pregnancy! She left several children.
John Louis died 4.5.1918 whilst serving as a stoker on the S.S.Transylvania when it was sunk by a German U.boat in the Gulf of Genoa Italy, carrying troops to Egypt. John, aged 26, was married and had 3 children-a daughter and 2 sons.
I have, so far, been unable to trace any descendants of these relatives.
I will revisit the site to clarify other questions that I see as soon as possible.

Re: Titanic William James Revell born 1880 in Liverpool
Hello John and welcome,
Why don't you start a new topic and kick off the search you are interested in. Include any information you already have on Alexandrina and her brother John Louis, such as DoBs, marriages, children, etc. Any eventual search for living relatives would have to be done off-forum of course, perhaps via PM [Private Message].
Would this be Alexandrina's birth?
REVELL, Alexandrina
Registration district: Liverpool
Year/qtr of registration: 1882 / Oct-Nov-Dec
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 98.

Hi John
My mother's maiden name was Revell and although I don't think we are related, this story really captured my heart! To lose a husband and a brother on a ship that was meant to be unsinkable was so sad! I will be so glad to give you any help
in finding Alexandrina and John Louis - perhaps as DS said to start a new thread with the information that you have.
Kind Regards
Victoria
